These People Need to Be Sued

By | June 14, 2012

We’ve had the privilege of helping hundreds of people with their Windows computers. We were not surprised to see how many of these computer were barely running due to spyware and adware which people unknowing install thanks to the current developer fascination with bundling.

Bundling is when developers bundle other software with the software you really want in order to make money from their freeware. It’s no wonder than that so many people who do their homework and download only reputable freeware get unwanted surprises if they’re not very careful during the installation process. In fact, even if they’re careful, unchecking the boxes which give you the option to install the bundled software doesn’t to anything at all and the bundled software is installed anyway — often without any acknowledgements or license agreements.

There’s one particular company who tops the lists when it comes to installing junkware on personal computers — and that’s the parent company of Ask.com — the failed search engine — Interactive Corp. Interactive is the company behind FunWebProducts which is anything but fun. They have so many junkware programs including MyWebSearch, SmileyCentral, Webfetti, and dozens and dozens of others — the most deplorable of which is a Bible quotes/study toolbar. This company has even sunk to the level of playing on religion in order to make a profit.

We recently worked on a computer which had become so slow and was crashing so often the owner could barely use it. This person had no idea why she was getting popups, browser redirections or why her home page was being hijacked. When we scanned the computer with Malwarebytes over 200 instances of Interactive Corp (FunWebProducts/MySearch et. al.) were found on her computer. Malwarebytes calls anything related to FunWebProducts / IAC as a PUP (Potentially Unwanted Program). They call them PUPs to avoid lawsuits. But we will call a spade a spade since no one could sue us because we’re broke — and you can’t squeeze blood from a turnip. We’ll call it junkware, adware, and yes, even spyware. It’s not potentially unwanted is unwanted — or it should be.

With over 200 instances of PUPs on this computer, there’s no wonder why this person’s computer barely ran. And it got this bad because once this stuff gets on a computer the “updater” installs more and more garbage. These are not updates, they’re additional programs. As soon as FunWebProducts IAC comes up with new garbage, it gets installed via the “updater” (wsupdsvc.exe).

These people should be sued and forced to pay to repair the computers they ruin with their garbage. They should be forced, by law, to stop distributing their junkware by paying developers to bundle it with decent software. We’d blame the developers but there are literally thousands of them and they’re not going to stop bundling until the companies which make adware/junkware stop paying them to bundle it.

Tell us what you think about this and what you think should be done to prevent multi-billion dollar, publicly traded companies from doing this kind of thing to personal computers. Do you think they should be sued in class-action lawsuit and forced to compensatory damages for the harm their junkware causes? Do you think they should pay for using people’s computers as billboards to make money?

Here’s the actual scan log from Malwarebytes from June 8, 2012. Only the username was changed to protect the individual’s privacy.

I Do think these companies like Interactive Corp. should be sued in a class-action lawsuit, and forced to pay compensatory damages for the harm their junkware causes.
I do use Malwarebytes to “root” out these “criminals”.

I personally have had the unwanted “extras” installed on my computer, even though I had unchecked the box. On several, when I go to uninstall them, a box pops up and says that I should check the uninstall box if I wish to uninstall or hit cancel to abort the uninstall process. Interestingly enough, the uninstall box never is there, but rather just the cancel. I agree that they need to be held accountable for their destruction of our computers.

Hi all! This makes me so very angry also. I have helped a few people with their computers. I am in no way a computer guru. However, these people know so little it’s scary! I want to scream what has this country come to today! We have scamming commercials legally on television and even in this country it is not illegal to ruin someone’s computer! It is very legal to scam people in the USA! No, the laws are not there to protect the innocent. They now protect only those with lots of dollars! Some of us sit here and think that these scammers are home based solely in other countries; that the good old USA would not allow it here. Check again please. I have found on even the supposedly safe sites such as Java download updates (I am thinking it was the Ask search box add-on)that they now try to package. And you are so right! Go ahead and untick that box. However, you are just wasting a click of the mouse. You will have carpel tunnel long before that click works. I am not sure if Java still installs it or not if the box is unchecked. But others that are way out of my mind at the moment I know do.
I could scream all day. But until a whole lot of us are screaming I will only get a sore throat! I can no longer enjoy watching television. Some one wants me to buy NO No, knives that might last through two uses, or some other such useless device. Browsing the internet is even worse. You may not click on any link until you double and triple check it. Be warned though it still may cost you many hours of repair or even ruin your computer!

I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to carry on. Actually I have managed to stop myself! I wish we could get organized as a group to do something to stop this! If anyone knows of such an organization or group I would love to know about it. If anyone needs help organizing such a group. I have time and a computer! I’m rather homebound; but anything I can do from here–I’m ready!

Thanks for giving people the heads-up again!

One would think that if Microsoft knew about this, they would do something about it. If CloudEight were to inform them about it, or maybe send this very report to them, perhaps they would sit up and listen? If Microsoft, with the help and intervention of the FCC, or whatever government department that handles stuff like this, were to get together, perhaps Interactive Corp. could be shut down.

Microsoft is aware of this. They’ve been aware of this. And as long as you can install software on a Windows computer, criminals will find a way to trick you into installing something they want you to install so they can steal your information — or in the case of IAC corp. turn your computer into a billboard and a source of income for them. They can’t make a go of it with their Ask.com search engine, so they’ll go to any lengths to grab money anyway they can. If that means harming your computer with useless junk, oh well. They obviously don’t care.

I am ALL for suing these people. They make it almost impossible to download anything “safe” because of all the download buttons they put on these sites. They are causing computers to go “haywire” and costing honest people money.

These bundlers have not broken any law, since there isn’t one in place to stop them. I think a law should be passed, and suing should be the result of defying it, but who is in a position to create such a law? Who is the boss of the internet? At present, we all use it at our own risk, and it’s thanks to people like TC and EB that some of us survive at all.

TC & EB. You do your darndest to give the best computer advice possible and the insidious programs such as those in the article, created by people who would be fully aware of their malicious creations, and the damage they cause to computers of individuals. As far as I am concerned, the damage caused is not unlike physically destroying a computer with a sledge-hammer.
Those responsible should be punished for cyber-vandalism, and there should be laws created to stamp out the ongoing and growing maliciousness by cowards hiding in the shadows of the Internet!

I totally agree with taking action on all the bundling and garbage many receive with downloads they believe are safe and recommended. As for the unchecking boxes for unwanted, forget it. You still get them. And be SURE to watch when downloading something FREE and even recommended, as you have to make sure you click on the correct download. Thanks be we have people like TC and EB here to help us.

I don’t know if this is why my pc is so slow or not, but will have it checked out. I know enough about the pc to be dangerous!! I am so tired of FB that it keeps “stalling” or sending me back to another page. If sueing the compaies that are responsible for this I’m all for it.

While I normally opt for non-government interference, in this case, I think the time has come for some sort of control on internet traffic. This would be difficult to set up, because we would need to be wary of having anyone working with the plan that in any way might be connected to the destructive platforms that we are fighting!! I am not a newby, nor am I a techie wiz…I am simply an everyday individual who has noticed more and more how unstable my computer has become, and that I don’t really understand what is causing the problems. Our computers are often referred to as PC’s. PC is quick-speak meaning Personal Computer. Our computers used to be Personal Computers….but that is fading fast. How can we fix this?

Can we actually sue w/o very specific laws in place? I would very much like to see some of these greedy people be brought down. Greed is running rampant in our world today, and not just on the internet. It’s a very dishonest world we live in these days and very sad that the kids know no other world. They weren’t here when people were half way normal. OK, I’m done… sorry!

    Hi,

We MUST find a way to stop this type of trash!! I sure don’t want anyone dumping “junk” in any form on me! For any company to pile up whatever they want on my computer is like using my front yard for the city dump!

I’m so glad we have friends like you to help us keep a watchful eye on things like this!

It seems as though all most all of us have been a victim of these nefarious Corporation’s at one time or another. I agree with all of these comments. Corporations like IAC should be named in a class action law suit for tampering with personal PC’s and made to pay for any and all repair costs. Also, as much as I hate Big Brother’s involvement in things, The FCC needs to put regulations into effect to stop Corporations’ from using these types of unwanted tactics and practices. This is hijacking, the last I heard hijacking was illegal, (i.e. browser hijackers). I like the idea of Corp’s paying PC owners for advertisement usage rights of their personal PC’s, better yet make paying legitimate companies a legal violation subject to racketeering laws,( bribery). Also fine these legitimate companies for the acceptance of said bribes. If a lass action suit ever comes about, please include me as a victim.

I agree with everyone, something should be done. But will we ever see that day? I don’t think so.

I like downloading and buying computer games online and I only download from sites that I know (MSN games, Popcap). MSN games always asks me if I want to change my browser to MSN? (check box) I always check no. (I run Google chrome as my default browser and I am perfectly happy with Google, if I wanted IE I would use IE).

I use Microsoft Security Essentials. After downloading the game, MSE pops up and says a program is trying to make a change to your computer, do you want this change? I always check no.

Never fails, I go to access the internet and lo and behold IE has taken over my browser. Doesn’t matter if you say no, they will do it anyway.

Do you see a pattern here? Microsoft, MSN. I don’t have this problem with any other sites, just MSN.

The only thing these companies are interested in is taking your money. The only thing that will stop them is start taking their money and lots of it and watch how fast they will stop. Sign me up for a class action suit to stop this nonsense.

I am all in favor of anything that will stop these people from doing what they do to our computers…I am waiting now for Cloudeight Direct Care to contact me because I have no clue what I did to get my computer in the mess it`s in… I try to be very careful when I download anything but all the hidden junk that comes with it is absurd and so hard to get rid of so yes, we need to take a stand and make them responsible for their actions….

As there are currently no laws covering this- We need to know where these parasites physically operate from & find some willing neighbours who own baseball bats & the like. Broken skulls & kneecaps may be the only way to get the message through to people who think they are untouchable.

Absolutely these maggots need to be brought down and brought down hard. When information such as what is contained in this article is transmitted to enough uninformed computer users, perhaps then more people will detour away from all of these websites. In the back of my mind I wonder why is so much effort being expended into creating these websites to acquire money so deceptively. To me the answer seems to go beyond just to make money & become cagillionaires, I suspect that the money is going towards a much larger & most likely illegal domestic or international operation. I would love to see the vermin behind all these websites investigated.
