Use Cortana as your go-to dictionary

Use Cortana as your go-to dictionary

Here’s a quick tip for those of you using the North American version of Windows 10. You may have mixed feelings about Cortana but, she’s useful and can save you time I tells ya!

Like if you want to know the weather you can ask her:

“What’s the weather (today)?” You can insert any day for “(today)”.

Do you need to know what sesquipedalian means?

Just ask Cortana: “What does (insert word here) mean?” Give the old girl a few seconds and she’ll tell you and show you in the search results area – including some grammarian stuff – as well. Sure beats going to Dictionary.com or Merriam-Webster and fighting your way through a sea of advertisements just to find out what a word means.

So the next time you stumble over a word you do not know, don’t slough it off! Learn baby, learn. It takes only seconds to ask Cortana – and then you’ll know for sure what schadenfreude means 🙂

Next to the start button to the right, you’ll see either a search box or a magnifying glass icon, click it. If Cortana is set up already “she” will greet you by the name you gave “her” to call you when you set it up. If not, it will ask you if you want to set it up. You’ll need a microphone and a Microsoft account ( hotmail, live, msn, outlook.com email address) – there are workarounds but why make life difficult? Setting up Cortana is very easy and the instructions are on screen and step-by-step.

If you live in someplace other than North America, you don’t have Cortana yet. I guess she only speaks the droll North American English as opposed to the colourful English spoken by our friends in Great Britain, Australian and New Zealand. Not so sure about South Africa. Is it colourful or colorful there?
