Using Zamzar to Convert File Formats

Penny wants to know what we think of Zamzar.com
I found a site called zamzar.com. It’s says it can convert files for you that you can’t open. I have a file that won’t open with WinZip even though it is some type of zip file. I wanted to try to convert and open with this site. Do you think it’s safe? Love your newsletter!

Our Answer
Thanks Penny. Zamzar offers a great service for those who don’t want to download programs to convert files from one format to another. Their privacy policy is short, easy-to-understand, and fair. They make money by upselling users to faster service with more options. But, the free service works well, if you’re willing to wait a few days to get your converted file back.

For others who’ve never heard of Zamzar.com, here’s what the service does and how it works in a nutshell:

Zamzar converts media files, zip files, graphic files, documents and other files from one format to another. You upload the file you want converted, tell them what format you want it converted to (you choose from a drop-down menu) and when your file has been converted they mail it back to you. For free users this can take several days.

Zamzar breaks the conversion types down into seven categories: document formats, image formats, music formats, video formats, ebook formats, compressed format and other formats, There are over 100 different file types you can convert from and to, see http://www.zamzar.com/conversionTypes.php for a list of the file types available.

Zamzar seems to be a safe site offering a service that may appeal to many of our readers. Especially those who need to convert music or video files from one format to another. Zamzar offers a free service and a paid service. If you use the service free though, you should be prepared to wait a while to get your file back – paid users get their files converted first.

I’ve been using Zamzar (free) quite often…..probably 2-3 dozen times over the past year. I think it’s been about that long, and I’m very pleased with it. I think it was you, TC, that introduced me to it in the first place. I’ve personally never had to wait more than a few minutes. I’ve only had to convert document files, so can’t speak on other file types at all. I feel it’s a safe site to try, Penny. You’ll always have your original file, so you won’t lose anything in the effort.
    Good Luck.
