Windows 10 Giveth and Windows 10 Taketh Away

Windows 10 has many new, useful and exciting features. But you should know that if you upgrade to Windows 10 some features you’re used to will be removed;  this is especially true for Windows 7 users.

If you have Windows 7 , Windows 8 Pro with Media Center, or Windows 8.1 Pro with Media Center, Windows Media Center will be removed when you upgrade to Windows 10. You’ll need to install a media player in order to watch DVDs on your Windows 10 computer. Luckily for you who plan on upgrading, there are several good free media players that work well on Windows 10, the most popular one is VLC player (Video Lan).

Windows 7 users will lose all desktop gadgets. Desktop gadgets will be permanently removed when you upgrade to Windows 10.

Windows 10 Home users will have updates from Windows Update automatically available and installed.  Windows 10 Pro and Windows 10 Enterprise users will have the ability to defer updates.

Windows 7 users will lose preinstalled games like Solitaire, Minesweeper, and Hearts. Some of these games will be replaced by new versions of Solitaire and Minesweeper. They are called the “Microsoft Solitaire Collection” and “Microsoft Minesweeper.”

Windows Live Essentials installed on your Windows 7 or Windows 8x system contains an older version of OneDrive. The old version of OneDrive will be replaced with the inbox version of OneDrive if you upgrade to Windows 10.

Will the upgrade from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 affect email programs in any way as some upgrades have in the past? Specifically, will we still be able to use Outlook2007 or Outlook 2010? Will we still be able to Personalize desktop wallpaper with a random slideshow of wallpaper?
    Thank you…

I am slightly getting confused. After one year will you have to buy this free upgrade. I have been told yes you will have to purchase it and no you don’t have to if you have windows 8.1. Plus will there be any kind of installation icon so if I ever have to reformat my computer I will be able to reinstall windows 10?
    Thank you for your help.

I purchased a new computer with Windows 7 on it and read in your information that all of the gadgets in Win 7 will not be available in the new Windows 10. What gadgets are you referring to? I already have the VLC media player installed. Will that have to be installed again? What about other things I have installed on here, like the Fast Stone Capture, Super Anti Spyware, etc.? I reserved the Win 10 from the Microsoft website and read that I would have a year to download and install it. I am thinking about waiting about a month or so to see if there are any problems with it, but you have said that you like it so I am not sure what to do. I will wait on your advice as I trust your opinions.
    Thank you for your help.

I have Win7 Home, so the only FREE upgrade I could get is the Home version of Win10. Mandatory Auto Updates in the Win10 Home version is a deal breaker for me. If I upgrade, it looks like I’ll be paying for the Pro version. Maybe that’s Microsoft’s intention? Or, maybe they’re just throwing home users under the bus again. I just don’t trust that updates will suddenly become “trouble free”, and who knows what they will sneak into those updates in the future. Some may think I’m too suspicious or cynical. but I think there’s reason to be.
