Your First Line of Defense is YOU
You’re going to hear tell of all kinds of miracle programs that can save you from every single danger you’ll face on the Web…but we’re hear to tell you that that is just not true.
What if someone told you that if just install this one little device on your car, you and your family would be safe from everything. Would you buy that device? Of course not. But many people have become wealthy by selling snake oil on the web.
The reason we wrote “Your Computer Still Won’t Bite” is because the Web is changing. It more and more reflects the non-cyber world. That wouldn’t be so bad if everyone took their non-cyber-world savvy with them on the Web and thought before they clicked or got themselves in a really bad situation, but they don’t, We don’t know why smart people with a lot of good common sense do dumb things when they get on the Internet…but they do.
If you read our “Your Computer Still Won’t Bite” e-book, we will promise you you’ll be a lot safer than if you don’t read it. Education and knowledge are essential fo staying safe on the Internet of Things because, your first line of defense is you.
From the chapter called “Sea of Scams” in our Your Computer Won’t Bite e-book comes this:
“…Since laws against selling snake oil on the Web are weak – and sometimes non-existent – snake oil salesmen abound…they’re ubiquitous. Avoiding them and their trickery, deceit and scams is easier said than done.
The One-click fix scam – the idea you can fix whatever ails your Windows computer with one click. This is not only false, it can be costly. These one-click-fix people sell their snake oil and it’s not inexpensive; considering it never works — it’s like throwing money down the drain.
The telephone scams – “Hello. Microsoft calling. Your computer is infected and spreading spam and viruses and we need to fix it.” a voice says with a definite foreign accent.
Believe it or not, millions of unfortunate people have fallen for this scam because they just don’t know that Microsoft doesn’t ever call people and Microsoft wouldn’t know if your computer was infected anyway, and they don’t care. It’s not that they’re indifferent but assuming that Microsoft knows your computer is infected is like assuming the company that manufactured your car knows your water pump is going bad. It’s not that your car company is cold and heartless, but once you buy the car you can use it any way you want. It’s the same with computers.
You see, information is essential. If only those poor souls who were bilked by criminals posing as Microsoft knew that one little bit of information, they would have not been scammed. And they would not be out hundreds of dollars.
If people could instantly recognize a phishing email when they saw one, a lot less people would have their bank accounts cleaned out or their credit card numbers stolen. One little bit of information could have saved them all the grief and all that money …”
We wonder how many of your have spent money on programs that promise to speed up your computer, keep it clean, make it run like new – all with just a click? If you did spend money on something like this, you wasted your money. Those kinds of programs just don’t work and never have.
So it’s just not the obvious scams that you need to be wary of, it’s the snake oil salesmen who make genuine-sounding claims, have professional looking Web sites and really cool-looking, enticing online stores you need to be very wary of too. But how are you supposed to know?
You are supposed to know because it’s your responsibility to know because your first line of defense isn’t a software program or a firewall or any kind of antivirus… YOU are the first line of defense. If you know what you’re doing you can avoid 90% of the snake oil scams, malware, identity theft and worse that happens to millions of people every single day.
Our “Your Computer Still Won’t Bite” is written in plain, easy-to-understand English…no technical stuff. And we promise if you read that e-book you’ll be much, much safer on the Web. Why? Because knowledge is key and our new e-books give you the knowledge you need to navigate the Internet safely. We put a lot of work into it to make it an easy-to-read guide to help you avoid the dangers you fave every time you are on the Internet. But it won’t do you one bit of good unless you read it.
We hope you do.
