Sharon wants to organize her photos Our answer
We've always liked FastStone Image Viewer for organizing photos, and
it's free. It's not just an image viewer, it's a photo organizer
too, showing you a "contact sheet" of all images in a folder. We've
recommended it several times. You can see what it does, how it
works, and where to get it by reading
our review here.
I hope this helps you, Sharon.
Mildred wants to replace
QuickBooks
Is there any replacement for online QuickBooks? I would need a desktop program that will let me import all my data from the paid online QuickBooks I now use, but can no longer afford to pay for. Thank you. Our answer
GnuCash is a free, open-source, double-entry accounting
program available for Windows. GnuCash can import data in
QIF (Quicken Interchange Format) and OFX (Open Financial
Exchange) formats. You might be able to export some data
from QuickBooks Online in these formats, but the exports may
lack some detail, and the process can vary. Some users have
also said they've successfully imported CSV files into
GnuCash after a bit of experimentation.
There are no free programs I know of or that I can find that
allow you to easily import all QuickBooks data.
If you're interested in learning more about GnuCash,
see this
page.
I hope this helps you, Mildred.
Dianne
asks
about
Memory
Integrity
in
Windows
11
Should I have 'Memory Integrity' on or off? And why? I think I turned it off a long time ago, but I don't remember why. I just now got a message 'suggesting' I turn it back on--which I did (for now).
Our
answer
I have a feeling that if Core isolation/Memory integrity is turned off and you try to turn it on, you won't be able to. But if you can turn it on, then by all means do so, but if you can't, don't worry too much... keep on reading.
Not being able to turn on Memory integrity usually happens when you have incompatible drivers on your PC and the only solution to get “core isolation ” back will be to remove the incompatible drivers, before you do so, please keep in mind that removing a driver means, that the device which is associated with the driver will not work, so either accept the risk and ignore the Core isolation Memory Integrity not available error or give it a try. On one of my computers (Windows 11) I am unable to turn on Core isolation/Memory integrity. But everything on my computer is running fine so I’m not going to mess with deleting drivers just to turn on Memory integrity. Keep in mind that Windows 10 had the same settings options, and Core isolation/memory integrity was turned off by default. So, since Microsoft is supporting Windows 10 until 10/14/2025 and since there are tens of millions of Windows 10 users, Microsoft may be (again) blathering. As I said, my settings are the same as yours, and I’m just going to leave them alone. We hope this helps you – or at least gives you some peace of mind, Dianne.
Sandie is having problems with Windows File History
I've done a bit of Googling, and see there are 3rd party backup apps, but I don't know if they will, or can do a File History backup. If so, and I can't get my PC to do it without the app then I'll get the app.
But if you can help me get the PC to do what it's supposed to be doing, I would appreciate it. Thanks, Sandie.
Our answer
It's not free. But you get 1000 GB of backup space (more than enough for most people) plus the newest updated versions of Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and other MS Office programs when you subscribe to MS365. A personal subscription costs $9.99/month ($99.99 annually).
Once you sign up and log into OneDrive (already installed on Windows 10 and 11 PCs) all your personal files are backed up automatically and they're continually backed up automatically. If something happens to your computer or you get a new computer or a second computer, all you have to do is log into your OneDrive account with your MS365 username (email address) and password. All your files will be accessible almost immediately. Darcy and I have been using OneDrive for years now, and it really is the only reliable backup we have found.
This is probably not what you wanted to hear, but I have to be honest with you.
If you want to try to continue to use File History, you can try to reset it by following the instructions on this page.
We hope this helps you, Sandie.

Nora asks about Emsisoft if she upgrades to Windows 11
Hi. Hope you’re enjoying the spring weather. My question pertains to Emsisoft and the end of Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. My Emsisoft is due for renewal on Oct. 23. Should I renew Emsisoft before Oct. 14 and then contact Microsoft or Opatch for the paid version to have support for another year, or wait until after I renew Emsisoft? Or should I pay, say late September or early October, then renew Emsisoft? I’m confused. Lol! I don’t want Windows 11 on a new computer. I’m 86 and don’t want to buy or have to learn a whole new operating system. A friend told me that for $1,000 or more, he could get me a new computer and transfer all my files, contacts, etc. over to a new computer. Seems like a lot! What should I do? Firstly, I’m agreeable to $30 and one more year. Our answer
You'll be happy to know it does not matter what order you do things as far as Emsisoft is concerned, because Emsisoft will continue to work whether you're using Windows 10, upgrade to Windows 11, or use Windows 10 with 0patch. Keep in mind, 0patch is just a program that installs periodic security patches on Windows 10 after Microsoft stops issuing them to keep Windows 10 safe to use.
So, you can renew Emsisoft anytime before it expires, but it's always a good idea to do it a few days before it expires, since you don't lose any days of coverage by renewing it early. You can purchase a renewal at https://thundercloud.net/emsisoft/ any time before October 23. But remember, if you renew a week or two earlier than that, you don't lose any days on your license. When we renew your license, we add 365 days to your current license.
I hope this answers your questions, Nora. If not, let me know.
Rona is missing two Windows updates
Hi Darcy & TC. I am having a problem with downloading the latest updates. I have a message that says my device is missing important updates. When I go to the Windows update site and try to download the two that they say are missing, nothing happens. The two are KB5055523 & KB5054979. My option for getting the latest updates is "on," and I have not had any trouble before. I have the latest 24H2 version. What to do? As always, I value your sound advice. Many thanks, Rona. Our answer
However, neither of these updates seems to be a critical security update, so my advice would be to wait until June's Patch Tuesday (10 June 2025). These two missing updates may install with the Patch Tuesday update, as the Patch Tuesday updates usually contain new updates and updates that your PC may be missing.
I hope this helps you, Rona.
Ford asks about Crap Fixer
Have you heard of a program called Crap Fixer? If so, what is your opinion of it?
Our answer
Hi Ford. Crap Fixer is just another Windows tweaker in a long
line of Windows tweakers. I'm highly skeptical about the
necessity and safety of these kinds of apps in modern Windows
versions, as they can sometimes cause more problems than they
solve. While CrapFixer says it's safe with its undo feature, you
should always use caution when making deep system changes.
If you want a system tweaker that is more polished and one that
has been around a lot long than "Crap Fixer" yet does the same
things - and more. I suggest WinAero Tweaker. WinAero Tweaker is
available at
https://www.snapfiles.com/get/watweaker.html. The official
home page is full of ads for malware, so I recommend you
download it from SnapFiles. The SnapFiles page has not been
updated for Windows 11, but WinAero Tweaker is compatible with
Windows 11. This is not a recommendation, I'm just recommending
WinAero Tweaker over "Crap Fixer" since it's been around a lot
longer and has a nicer user interface than "Crap Fixer".
One last thing, all tweakers can cause major problems,
especially for those who are not certain of what they're
disabling or tweaking.
My recommendation is that you leave things alone unless you
really know what you're doing.

How to Remove Old System Restore Points System Restore points, Volume Shadow Copies, and other old Windows files can take up a lot of space on your hard drive. You can use Disk Cleanup to remove all but the most recent Restore Point, Volume Shadow Copies, and more. You should only do this cleanup operation if your computer is running well and you’re having no problems. If you are having problems, you may not want to clear all old restore points, as you may have to go back to an earlier restore point. Restore points take up a lot of disk space and for most users, it does not make sense to keep more than two or three restore points. Here’s how to remove old system restore points in Windows 10 or 11:
All About the Mysterious Puzzle Piece in Your Browser’s Toolbar Whether you use Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Edge, or another browser, you have probably noticed that little puzzle piece in your browser’s toolbar. \
Ever wonder why that icon for your browser extensions is a jigsaw puzzle piece? It’s a clever visual that captures what extensions do. They add extra functionality, fitting seamlessly into your browser, just like a piece fits to complete a puzzle. Your browser is already useful for surfing the web. But just like a puzzle with missing pieces, it might not do everything you want right out of the box. That’s where extensions come in. These small software programs are designed to extend your browser’s capabilities. They plug in and offer new features, tweak how things look, or automate tasks. Whether it’s blocking annoying ads, saving articles to read later, checking your grammar as you type, or managing all your passwords securely, extensions add pieces to your browser’s functionality to make it work better for you. The puzzle piece icon has become a quick and universal way to identify where you can manage these added features. Clicking it usually opens a menu where you can see all the extensions you’ve installed, manage their settings, and quickly enable or disable them. So, the next time you see that little puzzle piece, remember it’s more than just a random shape. It’s a symbol of how you can customize and enhance your web browser, piece by piece, to create the perfect online toolkit for your needs. The puzzle piece quickly opens your extensions menu, where you can manage them or even enable or disable them. The other day, my youngest son sent me a picture of my granddaughter taking a hike with him on a beautiful woodland hiking trail. Anyone who saw the smile on her face could tell that she was having a great time stomping around in the woods with her dad. Memories are being made that will be cherished for a lifetime. Looking at that picture, I had this unrequited yearning. It seems like a million years ago, and it seems like yesterday when my son and I took hikes every Sunday, during the autumn and winter, in the forests near our home. If I could save time in a bottle… When this kind of yearning wells up inside, I can’t wish it away, I can’t turn a blind eye to it, I can’t pretend it’s nothing. This yearning is a bittersweet feeling, but it is also a feeling of helplessness. I can’t go back. You can’t save those moments. I can’t put those times in a bottle and save them up for the future. You cannot relive those times again. I can never be what I once was. So many days I’ve spent doing things with my two boys, from coaching baseball, to attending school plays, watching football, and sharing a pizza, hiking in a brightly colored forest on a crisp, cool, clear October day...
