Terri gets the dreaded Windows Blue Screen
Recently I have had several problems, that, fortunately, I have been able to fix using Reimage. (Thank you for that recommendation!) Two days ago we had a "blue screen crash". We have NEVER had anything like this and I was wondering if this is an indication of more trouble to come and if we need to consider a new computer.

I am a complete novice with computers, but have managed to fly by the seat of my pants, thanks to you. I read your newsletter every week and try to keep things in order with your help. We have had McAfee for years and just in this past year, have become disenchanted with them, for not catching viruses. Is Microsoft Security Essentials better? Do you even recommend it? Your help is greatly appreciated.

PC Repair. In Minutes.

Our answer
First, thanks for your nice comments, Terri.

We're glad that you were able to repair your PC with Reimage. We think Reimage is a super program that has a very valuable use - to repair a seriously damaged computer that would otherwise require professional repair, or a format and reinstallation of Windows. It's not a magic bullet, and like any other software it will not work on 100% of all computers in different states of disrepair. But when your only alternatives are formatting your hard drive and reinstalling Windows, or taking your computer to a repair service and paying a couple hundred dollars or more, it just makes good sense to at least give Reimage a shot

In most cases (but not all cases) Reimage works wonderfully, and restores your computer back to a like-new condition while preserving all your data. It can repair a badly damage Windows system for a small fraction of what Best Buy or another computer repair company would charge. And just in case it does not work for you, for some reason, you'll get your money back, promptly. Try getting your money back from Best Buy or another computer repair company. Giving Reimage a try before spending $200 or more on a computer repair service like Best Buy, is a no-brainer. Your case is just another one of many success stories we've received from happy Reimage customers. We're glad Reimage worked for you.

Programs like Captain Optimizer can help keep Windows errors and problems from turning into computer-killing issues. Programs like Registry Commander can help keep your Windows registry from becoming bloated and unresponsive - thus slowing your computer to an annoying crawl. Using a good computer optimizer and a good registry optimizer cleaner can help prevent your computer from getting to a point where you have no choice left but to use Reimage to try to salvage your computer, before you haul it to Best Buy for a $200-$300 fix, or you have to format your hard drive, wipe all your data, and reinstall Windows. A good maintenance plan can really help prevent catastrophes or situations where you're down to few choices and none of them are good.

Blue screens are nothing to fear. I've personally had at least a dozen of them in the past couple years. If I panicked every time I saw one, I'd never get anything done. In most cases you can simply turn your computer off at the switch, wait two or three minutes, and turn it back on. You'll get screen that says something like "Your computer has recovered from a serious error" and it will ask you if you want to boot into Safe Mode - with several choices - or if you want to boot Windows normally. Choose "Boot Windows normally" if it's the first time you've seen a blue screen. Almost always, your computer will boot up without any problems and you won't seen another blue screen for a long time.

If the worst happens, and your computer won't boot, simply use our old trick RSTRUI.EXE and restore your computer back to a time before you got the blue screen. To read our RSTRUI trick again visit http://thundercloud.net/infoave/answers/2011/rstrui.htm  . You can use that method to boot into Windows if you can't boot normally - it will work 99% of the time.

We applaud your choice to dump McAfee - McAfee lives in the era of "more is better" but we're in the age of "less is better". Better protection with far fewer annoyances is what you're after, and Microsoft Security Essentials version 2 provides the best antivirus protection you can get - free or otherwise. And we're not real big fans of Microsoft, so you know it has to be good if we're giving it our thumbs up. It's lacking only in its antispyware protection. To augment Microsoft Security Essentials antispyware component, you can download SUPERAntiSpyware. The free version will help keep your computer free of spyware - but you'll have to remember to run it manually, because the free version doesn't have real-time protection. If you want to purchase the Professional license for SUPERAntiSpyware, you'll get proactive, real-time protection. And you can get it from us for $24.95SUPERAntiSpyware Pro with lifetime license is our choice. It's an economical choice too, because you can install it on two computers at no additional cost.

We can't think of a better combination to keep your computer protected than Microsoft Security Essentials and SUPERAntiSpyware. Both (running together) use less than half the system resources that McAfee uses. Plus you won't be annoyed by useless, annoying warnings and dialog boxes that McAfee likes to spawn. Good antivirus and antispyware should be well-behaved: the only time you should ever hear from them is when they've encountered a malicious file and have to notify you that the file has been isolated and your computer has been protected from it. Other than that, the only other time you should hear from them is when a new update or upgrade is available.

A reminder: Always keep your antivirus and antispyware updated - and upgraded.
