A comment from Joanne
I just want to give a shout out to TC for assisting me with installing
Windows 10 on my computer. The whole experience was awesome and TC new
exactly how long it would take. Windows 10 is a much user-friendly
software than Windows 8. In addition, I am so grateful for the
installation of Emsisoft. Thank you again, TC!
A comment from Jean

David wants a spell-checker for Thunderbird
Some months ago, Darcy installed Thunderbird onto my computer. Is it
possible to install a 'spell-checker' in Thunderbird as I would find it
most helpful when writing emails and, if it is, how do you recommend I
do it? Thank you both for enlightening me into the world of computers
over the years. David B.
Our answer
Hi David. Thank you for your nice comments.
Thunderbird has a built-in spell-checker.
To have Thunderbird check the spelling in the emails you write as you
write them:
-- Select Options from the Tools menu in Mozilla Thunderbird. ...
-- Go to the Composition tab/category.
-- Choose the Spelling tab.
-- Make sure Enable Spell Check as You Type is checked.
-- Click OK to close the Options window.
Hope this helps you, David.

David wrote back: "Thanks for your helpful advice as always. I
followed your instructions and no longer worry about sending emails
littered with spelling mistakes to youngsters better educated than
myself. Take care in these dark days. David."
Linda wants to remove her personal info from a Windows 10 laptop she's
giving away
I just bought a new laptop and I'm going to be giving my old laptop
away. What option do you suggest that I do to do a system reset? Or should I
do a factory reset? Thanks!
Our answer
Hi Linda. Please read our article here.
It explains how to wipe your hard drive and remove all personal files and
information from it and then reinstall Windows 10 so whoever you give it to
can set it up as they would a brand new computer. If you follow the
instructions on that page none of your personal info, files, programs,
documents, pictures, music, etc. will be on the computer nor will any of
your info or files be recoverable.
I hope this helps you, Linda.
Eloise wants to know where Windows hides the lock screen images
Where in the computer are the pictures of the Windows 10 Login screen
located. Some of them are quite nice and I would like to make jigsaw puzzles
out of the pictures.
Also, is there a good and free unzip program?
Our answer
Hi Eloise. Read our article about
Spotlight images here. Spotlight images are images that appear on the
Windows 10 lock screen (login screen). They are stored on your computer in a
hidden folder. It takes a lot of digging around and renaming, but you can
find them and use them.
The location of the Spotlight images is:
%LocalAppData%\Packages\Microsoft.Windows.ContentDeliveryManager_cw5n1h2txyewy\LocalState\Assets
If you want an easy way to get them,
check out our site pick here. It has 456 pages (and growing) of
Spotlight images - all free to download and use.
Windows 10 can unzip images natively - you don't need any 3rd-party programs
to unzip zip files. Just right-click on the zip file and choose "Extract
all" from the right-click menu.
Hope this helps you.
Donna can't find Windows Media Player in Windows 10
Good Morning. I do not interact with you as much as I used to because of
my work, I mostly use Apple software. That said, I still like to
contribute to you and need a link to do that.
My question is this: I do have one Windows-based computer and it has
lost Windows Media Player. I put it in the search bar, and it says I
have it, but when I go to my apps list, it is no longer there. It was
working last week, so somewhere in that past week it flew the coop. How
do I entice it to come home?
Blessings, Donna
Our answer
Hi Donna. I don't know what version of Windows you're using. If you're
using Windows 10, Windows Media Player should be in your Start menu
under Windows Accessories. If you don't see it there, type Windows Media
Player or WMP in the taskbar search.
When Windows Media Player appears in the search results click on Pin to
Start (to pin it to the Start menu) or "Pin to Taskbar" to pin it to
your taskbar. If you want a desktop shortcut, read the instructions
below for Windows 7 or Windows 8x - as it works the same in Windows 10.
If you're using Windows 7 or Windows 8x, right-click on the desktop,
choose "New" and then click "Shortcut" - in the location box copy &
paste this:
%ProgramFiles(x86)%\Windows Media Player\wmplayer.exe
Click Next then give it a name such as "Windows Media Player" for
instance. This will create a desktop shortcut for Windows Media Player.
If you want to add Windows Media Player to your start menu, open File
Explorer (Windows Explorer) and navigate to:
C:\ProgramFiles(x86)%\Windows Media Player and right-click on
wmplayer.exe and choose "Pin to Start".
I hope this helps you.

Sue has questions about Adobe Acrobat DC
First, thank goodness for your Newsletters, I have been subscribed for
many years and find so many topics so completely helpful! In searching
for ways to disable Adobe Acrobat Reader DC updates which apparently
requires some serious registry changes, etc. of which I'm not
knowledgeable enough to want to mess with, I decided to search your
website and find that it's an AWFUL program! Yikes! I read in a forum
that people were using Foxit instead. My problem with the Reader updates
is that if I have open PDF's, it automatically updates and renders my
open documents unable to be saved. VERY annoying. Can you recommend a
good PDF reader? I haven't looked into FOXIT yet, but would prefer to
hear your suggestions. Thanks ever so much for watching out for us
computer folks!!
Our answer
Hi Sue. I think you misread our article - there's nothing wrong with
Adobe Acrobat DC itself, it is the stuff it tries to install with it
that we wrote about. Adobe bundles it with useless programs like McAfee
Security Scan, True Key, and tries to install an Adobe Chrome extension
that you don't need. But none of the things they attempt to trick you
into installing are malware, just useless software you don't need.
Please
re-read our article about Adobe Acrobat DC here.
Any program you install creates and modifies registry entries And any
time you update an installed program it will alter the registry, there
is nothing unusual about that and nothing intrinsically harmful in that.
If a legit program updates it's going to make changes to the registry.
Even when you make changes to your computer, like adding or removing
items from the Windows 10 start menu or change your Windows colors your
registry is changed.
If you still want to change PDF readers,
Sumatra
is a good free one.
Arnold is getting conflicting information regarding updating
graphic drivers
I don't know if anyone else has had this problem but when I went to do a
Windows Update yesterday it showed that I had an update ready to
download which was Intel Corporation-Display- 26.20.100.7529.
I tried downloading it and came up with the following message: A current
driver on your PC may be better than the driver we're trying to install.
We'll keep trying to install. I then noticed that same driver was
already installed successfully. But the problem is that same update
keeps coming up every time I try to do a Windows update and it keeps
saying the same message. It does have a retry button which I have tried
repeatedly but that update just won't go away. In fact, I have noticed
that same driver has been installed successfully twice--once on the 28th
and again today, the 29th. Very frustrating. Maybe you could help clear
this up. By the way this came up after the big update which I did on the
28th without any problems. Thanks, Arnold
Our answer
Hi Arnold. We do not recommend using Windows Update to update drivers or
relying on its recommendation to upgrade drivers. We've written a couple
of articles - like this one -
showing users how to turn off driver updates in Windows Update. And we
recommend that Windows 10 users do that.
And a reminder that if you're hardware is working correctly and you're
not having any problems, you don't need to update any drivers.
If you need to update your Intel Graphics driver, go directly to Intel
and find the correct driver for your graphics card. They make it quite
easy.
Visit to this page and click on the "Get Started" button next to
"Automatically update your drivers." Download the Intel Driver & Support
Assistant (Free).
But remember, if you're not having any problems with your display or
graphics card then you don't need to take any action or download or
update your graphics drivers.

Arnold wrote back: "Thanks for the information. That same driver
that they were trying to download I already had installed. So, I ended
up hiding the updates to get rid of that annoyance. Thanks for the quick
response! You guys are GREAT!"
Bev asks about StartPage.com
Hi TC & EB. Hope all is good with you both. A friend of mine said that
StartPage.com is a good app to have. What are your thoughts on this?
Thanks for looking after all of us "old ones". I don't know what we
would do without you. Stay healthy, Bev.
Our answer
Hi Bev. StartPage.com is a private search engine and browser start page.
It is not an app so you cannot have it, but you can use it. It's
ad-supported and purportedly does not collect user data or IP addresses.
Its search results are not as good or as accurate as Google's, but it is
more private than Google.
If you're willing to sacrifice good search results for "privacy" then
there's nothing wrong with StartPage.com. However, as we've written,
privacy in today's internet-connected world is an illusion. Personally.
I think since there isn't any real privacy, I prefer getting the most
accurate search results using Google --it saves me time.
Myron's new laptop is running Windows 10 S Mode
I have just purchased a new laptop computer and some things are popping
up differently than what I was accustomed to before. For example, I
cannot download Chrome to use as my default browser and it keeps talking
me to a window where it talks about S Mode. is this keeping me from the
Chrome download and will I benefit if I get out of it? Maybe you could
address this issue for people who are not familiar such as myself. Thank
you so much.
Our answer
Hi Myron. If your laptop is running in S mode, you cannot download
anything except what is available in the Microsoft store. That means you
can't download Chrome, or any other programs (apps) that are not in the
Microsoft store.
According to Microsoft: "Windows 10 in S mode is designed for
security and performance, exclusively running apps from the Microsoft
Store. If you want to install an app that isn't available in the
Microsoft Store, you'll need to switch out of S mode. Switching out of S
mode is one-way. If you make the switch, you won't be able to go back to
Windows 10 in S mode. There's no charge to switch out of S mode."
To switch out of S mode (and remember, once you do you will not able to
go back to it):
On your PC that is running Windows 10 in S mode.
Right-click on your Start button and click "Settings"
In Settings click on "Update & Security" then "Activation".
In the Switch to Windows 10 Home or Switch to Windows 10 Pro section,
select Go to the Store. (If you also see an "Upgrade your edition of
Windows" section, be careful not to click the "Go to the Store" link
that appears in that section.)
On the Switch out of S mode (or similar) page that appears in the
Microsoft Store, select the Get button. After you see a confirmation
message on the page, you'll be able to install apps from outside of the
Microsoft Store.
I hope this helps you, Myron.

Tab Groups in Google Chrome
Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 - Google Chrome installed
Google added another great feature to Google Chrome tools that will
help you keep track of your tabs. This new feature is called tab groups.
Tab groups let you group open tabs with a click. Once you’ve created a
tab group, you can label it using a custom color and name. You can
create as many tab groups as you want. Once you’ve created two or more
tab groups you can reorder the tab groups as well as the tabs within
them.
Tab groups are especially helpful for grouping your favorite news
sites, shopping sites, and so on. But I think the best part of tab
groups is that there saved when you close and reopen Chrome, saving you
the trouble of trying to find the site or websites you’re looking for.
How to create a tab group.
To create a new group, right-click on a tab and click on Add to New
Group.
You’ll see a colored dot next to the tab. To rename the group, or to
change the color, just click on the colored dot.
To add a tab to an existing group, right-click on the tab and choose
“Add to existing group” in the dropdown menu.
You can create as many tab groups as you want. You can add or remove
tabs from existing groups. You can also open tab groups in new browser
windows.
You can get creative with your tab group names – you can even use
emoji to name your groups.
Once you try tab groups, you’ll see why they’re so popular,
Above: The “Cloudeight” tab group. All of the tabs in this tab group are
underlined with the Cloudeight tab group color.
How to Pause Windows Updates For 35 Days
Windows 10 (all currently supported versions)
First, when you read about Microsoft updates gone awry, keep in mind
that the number of people with update problems is a very small
percentage of the total number of Windows 10 users.
There are about one billion Windows 10 users. If 3% of them have
problems with an update, that’s 30 million users. No doubt that’s a lot
of people, but that also means that a whole lot more people didn’t have
any problems with the update. But if you’re one of the 3%, it won’t
matter much to you how many didn’t have any problems.
It seems that the more time you allow to pass after a new update is
released, the better the chances are that whatever issues arise from
that update will be fixed. Therefore, the longer you can wait after the
update was issued, the more likely it is the upgrade(s) won’t cause big
problems.
We don’t recommend turning off Windows updates altogether as that
would leave your PC vulnerable to exploits and all kinds of mischief.
But, to be sure, delaying the update(s) for a short time could save you
a lot of aggravation.
The longest you can currently delay updates without installing them
is 7 days. The maximum delay used to be 35 days, but Microsoft changed
the update pause limit to back to 7 days with a recent update. But we’re
going to show you how to change it back to 35 days. This setting should
give you a long enough delay to allow Microsoft to fix any problematic
updates.
WARNING — THIS TIP REQUIRES EDITING THE REGISTRY — CREATE A RESTORE
POINT BEFORE PROCEEDING
1. Right-click on the Start button and click “Run”
2. In the Run Box type REGEDIT
3. When the Registry Editor opens, navigate to the following location:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsUpdate\UX\Settings
4. Locate
FlightSettingsMaxPauseDays
5. Right-click on FlightSettingsMaxPauseDays and
delete it.
After you’ve done that right-click the Start button
Click on Settings
Click on Update & Security
Click on Advanced Settings
Under “Pause updates” use the down arrow to the right of “Select
date” to choose a date to allow Windows updates to resume.
You can select a date and delay updates from 1 to 35 days. The
screenshot below was taken on 20 May 2020.
Thirty-five days should give you a nice buffer from the time updates
are released to the time problems are found and fixed - so you should
rarely experience a problem with updates.
Use the Taskbar Search to Convert
Windows 10 (version 1903 and newer)
There are many freeware programs and websites that convert
currencies, weights, temperatures, distances, etc. from one measurement
to another. There are dozens of freeware converter program. You use
Windows calculator as a converter
But you don’t need any of those, I tells ya, because you have a very
able converter right on your taskbar. I don’t need to waste a lot of
words here; I’m going to show you how with pictures.
To convert km to miles, just type it in the taskbar search and press
Enter.
Quarts to liters, liters to quarts? No problem!
How about liters to gallons or gallons to liters?
“They say the best things in life are free, but you can give them
to the birds and bees, cuz I want money…”
Yes, you can convert money using the taskbar search. Converting US
dollars to New Zealand dollars takes one second.
Canadian dollars to US dollars, just as easy, I tells ya!
Now we’re getting hot, and you’re catching on how to use the taskbar
search to convert. But how hot is it? Well, it’s 32 C. but what if
you live in the USA and you don’t do Celsius?
Or what if I am talking with a friend in Australia and I tell him
it’s a beautiful 78 degrees in my little town. He knows I don’t
mean Celsius – I’d be toast – 78 F is 25.6 C.
Centimeters to inches? Inches to centimeters? Not a problem if you
use the taskbar search to convert.
Feet to meters, meters to feet, using the taskbar search to covert,
you can do it in the blink of an eye. And if you’re a mathematics
buff, taskbar search even provides you the formula to use for
conversion.
Not living in the USA but have a recipe from the States? Don’t be in
a state of confusion if the recipe calls for 4 tablespoons of something.
Use the taskbar search to convert it to ml.
If you live in the USA and you’re taking a 500 mg pill, you probably
don’t know how much (or how little) that is. But you can find out.
That should be enough to convince you to try the taskbar search when
you need to convert currency, volume, weights, temperature, distance,
etc.
You don’t need no stinkin’ converters, I tells ya!
Windows 10 Version 2004 (May 2020 Update) is Available Now
Windows 10 (all supported versions)
Microsoft has released a new version of Windows 10. It’s officially
called the May 2020 Update – aka Windows 10 version 2004.
It will be rolling out over the next few months.
If you want to upgrade more quickly,
go to this page and click on the upgrade now button.
Just for our own protection…and yours:
Nothing in this post should be construed as a recommendation to
upgrade to Windows 19 version 2004 at this time. As with all Windows
version updates, our advice is to wait a while and let other people be
the guinea pigs. Usually, after a month or two, Microsoft gets most of
the bugs ironed out so as time passes fewer and fewer people have
problems with new versions of Windows 10.
If you like to take chances, or you like to be on the cutting edge
and you want to be among the first to try newest version of Windows 10 –
Windows 10 Version 2004 is available. And that's all we're saying, I
tells ya!

Over the years we’ve recommended several free font sites, but
it’s been a while since we found one worthy of mention. So on a
Saturday not too long ago, we took some time to search the web
looking for a good font site to feature in our newsletter. We went
through no less than 15 free (and not-so-free) font sites, looking
for a good one. We found one out one thing for sure, there are a lot
of fonts sites, and most of are not worthy of a place here in our
Freeware/Site of the Week section.
We found sites that looked good, but they made it like a game of
whack-a-mole trying to download the fonts they offered. We found
sites that said the fonts were free, but when you clicked to
download the font, you were transported to another site to pay for
them. We found sites buried in so many flashing and blinking ads,
they hurt my eyes. And the worst are the ones that package fonts in
exe installers that are loaded with hijackers and/or malware.
When we feature a free font site, we try hard to make sure that
the all or most of the fonts are free and easy to download. We also
look for a site that has a wide variety of styles and thousands of
fonts. And last, but not least, it has to be easy to navigate.
Today, we’re happy to introduce you to Abstract Fonts, a site
with an odd name, but one with thousands of free fonts. And they
make it easy to browse through the thousands of fonts they offer.
When you first visit the site, you’ll browse the most popular fonts.
But just click on Categories, and you’ll find dozens of font
categories (such as script, sans, serif, holidays, etc.)
We’ll show ya!
When you first visit Abstract Fonts, the first page you’ll see is
a page with a listing of the most popular fonts. Notice the blue
download buttons next to each font. Just click the download button
to download the font shown. All fonts (at least the ones we
downloaded) come in zip format. Just unzip and click on the font to
install.
If you’re looking to see more fonts, click on “Categories”, “New
& Popular” and/or “A-Z” at the top. There are almost 14,000 fonts to
browse through.
And yes, we did download several fonts and texted the download
process and the font. And we’re happy to report, all is well.
We love fonts. They’re fun to play around
with and useful too. If you like fonts as much as we do, and you’re
looking for a safe site where you can download free fonts,
we hope you’ll give Abstract Fonts a try. We think you’ll like
it.
Visit Abstract Fonts right now.

Are There Rain Puddles in Heaven?
It’s almost summer and it already feels like summer. I walk a lot
and I often see rain puddles. I don’t want to get my shoes wet, so I
avoid them. Life was easier when I was a kid. I didn’t avoid the
rain puddles, I loved splashing in them. Have you jumped in a rain
puddle lately? Do you even notice them?
I wonder: Are there rain puddles in heaven?
So often we get caught up in our concerns; we get caught in the trap
of our busy lives, in the tangled web of our routines, and in the
worries and the concerns we face. I don’t know if there are rain
puddles in Heaven or not, but I know for sure there are rain puddles
right here on Earth.
I can’t remember the last time I even looked at rain puddles.
Oh yes, I “see” them, but I don’t look at them. I don’t see those
dancing street-side pools full of childhood fun and reflections, so
quiescent on a gentle summer-like evening. When I was a kid, I used
to jump in them and ride my bike through them. But now I cannot
remember the last time I even looked at one, let alone wanted to
jump in one.
How sadly grown-up I’ve become. Now I avoid those rain puddles as
much as I can. But when we are children, we can’t resist splashing
in those rain puddles that spring up after a brief but furious
summer thunderstorm. Rain puddles shimmering, the air fresh with the
scent of rain, the storm has past and it’s rumbling its way to
another town, leaving behind rain puddles, exactly right for jumping
into.
How many rain puddles have you jumped in lately?
You probably avoid them just like I do. How many times have you
awakened in the morning and watched as the sun rose on a brand-new
day...

Rolling Back Windows 10 Feature Updates
A new Windows 10 feature update is rolling out right now. You
can call it Windows 10 Version 2004 or Windows 10 May 2020 Update
they're the same. A rose by any other name - you know.
Anyway, some of you will inevitably install it and then have
problems. And while System Restore may seem like the perfect way to
undo whatever damage the version update did, it won't. So, when it
comes to feature updates, take System Restore out of your thought
processes and vocabulary.
If you have problems with the May 2020 Update, you have 10 days to
go back to the previous version of Windows without losing any
programs, files, settings, etc. And here's how you do it:
Right-click on the Windows 10 Start button and click Settings (if
you're a shortcut fan, Windows key + i does the same thing)
On the Settings page, click Update & Security
In Update & Security, click 'Recovery' (it's on the menu on the
left).
In Recovery, you'll see "Go back to the previous version of Windows
10". and underneath it, you'll see a button labeled "Get started".
Click "Get started" to go back to the previous version of Windows
10.
If the button is grayed out, that means that more than 10 days have
passed since you installed Windows 10 Version 2004.
