A comment from David
I had TC work on my computer last month but I got busy and forgot to
write a testimonial and TC deserves it. Anyway, I just wanted to
let you know that since you worked on my computer in May, I have not
had any problems at all. Previously I had Darcy work on my computer
(last fall) and I can tell everyone that you're both exceptionally
knowledgeable and very pleasant to work with. . I'm sorry this is so
late getting to you Thanks so much for helping me and for the great
services you provide. David V.

Maureen says Emsisoft removed her Reg Organizer
Hi! Every week I run Reg Organizer, and this week it showed a new Beta
Update. I thought it said Beta 1 Reg Organizer 850. Emsisoft (which I
rely on) thought it was malicious. I told it ,it was okay, to run it
anyway, but it would not accept this from me and appears to have removed
it. My shortcut no longer works. Is there anyway I can restore it as I
always renew it? I can see it is quarantined in Emsisoft.
Our answer
Hi Maureen. This was a false positive with Emsisoft. We contacted them
and they fixed it right away. I am not sure why Reg Organizer is giving
people a Beta version, but it seems it only happens when Reg Organizer
users click on "Check for updates".
Anyway, we created a tutorial showing you how to get Reg Organizer back.
See this page

help, please let us know.
Barbara need to find a wireless password
I am trying to setup a new computer for a friend, it wants her WiFi

Roy wants to change his user account name in Windows 10
My Lenovo computer, now 7 years old, was originally "set up" by a computer
shop and it runs fine. However, when I check the Command prompt and type
WHOAMI, I get "C:\Users\User". TC or EB, how can I get my name shown in
place of "user"? Thanks in advance, Roy
Our answer
Hi Roy. Here is how to change your user account name
1. Type NETPLWIZ in taskbar search & press Enter when it appears in the
search results.
2. Click on the account you want to change
3. Click on "Properties"
4. A dialog will open with the current username highlighted. Click Delete
and type in a new name.
5. Click "Apply" "OK".
But... keep in mind this does not change the folder locations. For instance
Pictures will still be located at C:\Users\User\Pictures and Documents will
still be at C:\Users\User\Documents, etc. Changing the username does not
change the user folder locations. If you try to change those locations, you
risk losing data and a corrupt user account. If you really want a new user
account name, create a new user account with the name you want and then copy
all the data from all your user folders (Documents, Desktop, Pictures,
Videos, Music, etc.) to the user folders in your new account. This seems to
me to be a lot of work especially if you're the only one who's ever going to
see it.
Molly wants to know if she needs to install the software that
came with her external hard drive
Hi TC & EB. I just bought a new 2 TB Western Digital external hard
drive. I have not hooked it up yet. My question is do I need to install
the software that came with it or will it work without the software? I
need your advice! Thanks, Molly.
Our answer
Hi Molly. Your external drive will work fine without the software that
came with it. All you need to do is plug the drive into a USB port and
Windows will automatically detect it. We never recommend installing the
software that ships with external drives as it usually adds one or more
unnecessary startups to the Windows startup menu and the software is not
necessary to use the external drive. Less is more. If something
is not necessary, why install it? I hope this helps you.
Bob wants to know if we still recommend Zappit
Is Zappit still valid or is there something better? I guess from the
question you can tell I have been around for a long time. I read InfoAve
every week. You have given me lots of things that have helped me with my
computer. Thanks, Bob.
Our answer
Hi Bob. We no longer develop or support Zappit. You can use Windows Disk
Cleanup. It comes with all Windows computers. To run it just type
CLEANMGR in taskbar search and press Enter when you see it appear in the
search results.
If you're looking for something more advanced, yet free,
see our post on CleanMgr +.
Thanks for reading our InfoAve Weekly newsletter.
Cheri wants to know about RAM
This is for TC. Hi, I had the Mother's Day Pamper service. You came and
checked out my laptop to see why running slow. You worked your magic but
found nothing slowing down the laptop except low RAM. You checked couple
of websites for 4 gigs of ram. The laptop can be upgraded to 8 GB
of RAM. The laptop has only 2 GB RAM. I ordered 2 x4 GB from
Crucial.com. But when the RAM came it did not fit my laptop. Mine is a
slightly different model. RAM for my computer is hard to come by. That
is why Critical had no match. Found 4 GB for $69 each a total of $140.
So, I am not going to get 8 GB that's for sure. But getting a 4GB and
keeping the original 2 GB to give me a total of 6 GB is an option. I can
also add 2 GB for $17 giving me 4 GB of memory. What do you think? Thank
you for your opinion.
Our answer
Hi Cheri. I would go with 4 GB +2 GB giving you a total of 6 GB/. The
more RAM the better since you have a 64-Bit PC. As more is better, it
depends on the cost. Bur you would notice a huge difference just adding
2 GB of RAM. We consider 4 GB the absolute minimum for Windows 10 - even
though Microsoft says 2 GB is the minimum.
If you can afford to go with 6 GB (2+4) that's what you should do, but 4
would be twice as good as what you have now.
With only 2 GB of RAM your computer will never be fast. And it won't be
super-fast with 4 GB or RAM, but it will seem like a starship to you :-)
Maureen wants to know if Windows 10 is still free
A short time ago you mentioned that Windows 10 is still free and if I
wanted to change you would take care of everything for me. Are you still
willing to do this?
You may remember about me breaking both my wrists and still in a lot of
pain and not able to type for a long period of time. My Emsisoft trial
is almost over and I cannot afford the paid version. Should I leave it
for now and just use windows defender. You can answer all my questions
when you are able. I am not in a rush and I am sure you keep busy. I
have many questions for you before I decide to upgrade to windows 10.
Probably too many but I need to know what I am doing, and the answers
will help.
Thanks for all you do and please stay safe and healthy. we need you,
Maureen.
Our answer
Hi Maureen. As of today, Windows 10 is still free. I will help you with
the upgrade. Using Windows Defender is better than using Avast free, AVG
free and other free security programs.
I want to remind you that we (nor anyone else) can guarantee your
Windows 7 computer can be upgraded to Windows 10. Most (about 85%) can,
so all we can do is try. Once I start the upgrade it's automatic. It can
take several hours for the upgrade to complete, so one I get it started
and make sure it's going along as is should I will disconnect as there's
nothing else to do but let the upgrade play out.
So, let me know when you're available and we'll get the upgrade started
for you and do the best we can for you.
Virginia wants to know about a PDF conversion program
Happy Summer EB & TC! I used to have a program where I could send a file
directly to PDF, it would take a document written in the now defunct
PageMaker (boy, that was a great program, so easy to use. I miss it
greatly.) that I have on my external hard drive and convert it over to a
readable file. Somewhere along the line I lost that program. Just
recently, as I was using MediaFire sent to me by my Jigsaw Puzzle maker
this website popped up like it knew what I was previously wanting. I'm
afraid of websites that do that however, so I'm turning to "my" experts
to let me know if it's legitimate. What do you think of it?
Our answer
Hi Virginia. Happy summer to you! You don't need any software or web
apps to convert documents and other files to PDF format. Windows 10 has
that capability built-in.
See our article here to learn
more about it - it's very easy to do.
Lainey has sleep issues with Windows 10
My computer keeps "waking" after I put it in sleep mode or sign out at
night. How can I keep that from happening without having to shut it down
completely? Thank you.
Our answer
Hi Lainey. We no longer recommend using Sleep on Windows 10. It's a
hybrid of sleep and hibernate that seems to be flakey and is
unnecessary. Most people use sleep because they think it saves
electricity - and it does, but not much. The amount used by letting
your computer idle instead of using Sleep mode is equivalent to the
amount of electricity used by a night light. The big electricity hog on
your computer is your monitor (or laptop screen). A monitor can use
100-150 watts and a laptop screen can use 40-60 watts. So, we recommend
dimming the monitor or screen after 10-15 minutes of inactivity and
never putting the computer to sleep. This not only prevents sleep issues
like you're having, when you're ready to use your computer it's instantly awake as soon as your touch your mouse, touchpad or
keyboard.
If you still want to put your computer to sleep,
check out our article here about Windows sleep problems and how to
fix them.

How to prevent a Troublesome Windows Update From Reinstalling
Windows 10 (all versions)
Note: This tip applies to cumulative updates and other
regular Windows 10 updates. This does not apply to Windows 10 version updates.
If a version update causes you problems, by default, you have 10 days to go back
to the previous version of Windows 10.
See our article here if you have a version update that's causing problems.
In Windows 10, your PC or device is always kept up to
date with the latest features and fixes. This means, for most of us, Windows Updates are
installed automatically.
We are all aware by now that sometimes a Windows 10 update can cause problems with your PC. In this case, you'll need a way to
prevent the problematic update from reinstalling automatically the next time
Windows Updates are installed.
If an update is causing system crashes, problems or
instability on your PC, you can follow the instructions below, to prevent the
unwanted update from being installed:
Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Updates
.and then click on View update history:
Then click on Uninstall updates.
To uninstall the unwanted update, select it from the list
by clicking on it and then click Uninstall.
Now, you're all set until next time Windows updates, and
reinstalls the update you just worked so hard to uninstall. So, you have more
work to do, if you want to prevent Windows from reinstalling that
trouble-causing update.
To prevent the update from being reinstalled,
download the "Show or hide updates" troubleshooter package now.
When you click on the download link, you will be
prompted to open or save wushowhide.diagcab. Save it to your PC, and
click to run it.
Opening wushowhide.diagcab will launch the
troubleshooter. Then click Next to proceed and follow the instructions provided
by the troubleshooter to hide the problematic driver or update.
When the program starts to run, you'll see it scanning
your computer for updates. When it's done, you'll see a window like this one.
Click on "Hide updates"
Windows will display all pending updates:
You'll see a list of available updates. Select the update
or updates that are causing you problems. Windows will not reinstall the items
you select. You can choose to install the hidden updates later by
running the troubleshooter again and "unhiding" the updates.
Keep in mind that this does not stop updates from
installing. It only allows you to uninstall updates that have been installed and
are causing problems. It does not apply to version updates. Windows 10 version
updates have a rollback feature - you have 10 days to go back to the previous
version of Windows if a version update causes you problems.
See this page to learn how to roll back a Windows 10 version update.
Problems Installing the Windows 10 May 2020 Update? Don’t
Worry, Be Happy
Windows 10
Microsoft is doing the right thing this time around and blocking
the Widows 10 May 2020 Update on a lot of PCs. If yours is one of them –
don’t worry, be happy.
If you’ve been trying to install the May 2020 Update for Windows 10
without success – you’re not the only one. Many Windows 10 users are
seeing a notification that their device is not compatible with the
latest feature upgrade (Windows 10 May 2020 Update – version 2004).
If you’re getting a “your device is not compatible” notification when
trying to install the Windows 10 May 2020 update, don’t worry. This time
Microsoft is not pushing the new feature update on Windows 2010 users.
This time the company appears to be taking a more conservative and more
sensible approach. This hopefully, will result in fewer problems for
Windows 10 users and fewer public relations nightmares for Microsoft.
The May 2020 Update is the first of two major (version) upgrades for
Windows 10 scheduled for this year. It is already rolling out to
Windows 10 users. This time, Microsoft is throttling back the rollout
speed and not pushing it out to machines that may not currently be
compatible.
Microsoft seems to be slowing down this version update rollout to
avoid the widespread problems that have caused so many problems for so
many Windows 10 users.
From what I’ve been able to certain through my research, a
significant number of Windows 10 users are getting notifications that
their “device is not quite ready” for Windows 10 version 2020. The
Windows notification says:
“The Windows 10 May 2020 Update is on its way. We’re offering
this update to compatible devices, but your device isn’t quite ready
for it. Once your device is ready, you’ll see the update available
on this page. There’s nothing you need to do at this time. “
The notification is, I believe, intentionally vague. But the cautious
approach and the slower rollout that Microsoft is using this time, in my
opinion, are the right ways to do things. It is much better than the
ways of the past where Microsoft seemed to rush things out, pushing
users to install the feature update and then letting the users deal with
the problems.
In fairness to Microsoft, it’s important to
remember that Windows has to work on a multitude of hardware
combinations and trying to rush the rollout only brings a lot of grief
to Windows 10 users — not to mention a lot of bad press for Microsoft.
Microsoft, at least this time around, acknowledges that Windows 10
version 2004 has
several known issues that they are currently investigating.
I have Windows 10 2004 installed on one of my laptops. It’s the one
that I use for testing. But I’m in no rush to install the Windows 10 May
2020 update (version 2004) on my other laptop until Microsoft has had
plenty of time to work out the bugs. So far, I have had no major
problems with the new update on my test computer, nevertheless, I’m
going to wait for a few weeks before I install it on my other laptop.
If you are one of the many Windows 10 users who are getting the
notification that your device isn’t quite ready for the May 2020 Update
(version 2004). Don’t worry, be happy. It will all work out for the
best.
Be in Top Form When Filling Out Web Forms
A tip for everyone
When you are filling out web forms, did you know if you put your
information in the wrong form field – for instance, you put your name in
the email field – don’t delete it… you can highlight it and drag it to
the correct field. You don’t have to retype it. Think about it: you
normally would highlight the incorrect input anyway.
So just remember, highlight the information, and drag it to the right
place in the web form. The next time you enter your name in email field
or your email in the name field, etc., don’t highlight and delete,
highlight, and drag it to where it belongs.
Want more form tips? OK here you go!
1. Use the tab key to go from one field to the
next, instead of having to use your mouse.
2. Use shift-tab to move you backwards in the
form
3. If you are in an area with a drop-down box,
you can type the first letter of the choices to select it. This is handy
when you encounter a long list such as a list of states or countries.
Here’s an example: If you are in Michigan, you can click m key until
Michigan appears (since more then one state starts with the letter m),
with Michigan selected from the list, press the Enter key.
4. Use the up/down arrow box to go through
options on a form in a drop-down menu.
5. If you are using tab key to get from one form
field to the next, and you come to a box to check, you can check it by
clicking your space bar. click the space bar again to remove the check.
6. If you are filling out a form and you have
used that entry before on almost any web form, (i.e. name, address,
etc.), click the blank area twice and all prior entries will show.
Keep in mind that these tips work in many
standard web forms, but not all. But these tips should ensure that
you're in top form!
Windows 10 Users Will Automatically Get the New Microsoft
Edge
Windows 10 (all supported versions)
Microsoft’s new version of the Edge web browser, which is based on
Chromium like Google Chrome, will soon be automatically downloaded to
users’ computers.
The old version of Edge shipped by default with Windows 10 wasn’t
particularly good or very fast or extremely popular. Most people continued to use
Chrome or other browsers. Microsoft, using the “if you can’t beat them,
join them” philosophy, rebuilt Edge using the same Chromium engine as
Chrome uses. The new Edge is faster, easier to use, plus it allows its
users to access thousands of Chrome extensions.
The new Edge bears little resemblance to the old Edge. Previously,
the only way you could get the new Edge was by manually downloading it.
But now, Microsoft will be including it in several automatic updates for
Windows 10. If you haven’t downloaded the new Edge yet, it’s likely that
you will soon find the new Edge installed on your computer.
The new Edge will be included in the KB4541301, KB4541302, and
KB4559309 updates for Windows 10. These updates will be automatically
downloaded to your PC.
Normally, we’d be against this forced replacement of a Windows
program, but the new Edge is a huge improvement over the old Edge. It’s
much faster and easier to use, plus users of the new Edge will have
access to the same extensions as Google Chrome users. And given
that Microsoft will stop supporting the old Edge, its users will no
longer get security updates and no one should be using an unsupported or
outdated browser.
Previously, when you manually downloaded the new version of Edge you
were able to switch back to the old version, but once the new Edge is
automatically installed on your computer, you won’t be able to go back
to the old version of Edge. But the new Edge is a huge improvement
over the old version of Edge. And since Microsoft will end support for
the old version of Edge, at some point in the future, rendering the old
Edge outdated and unsafe, we think it’s a good thing that Microsoft will
be automatically replacing the old Edge with the new Edge.

Walter Cronkite, Kopi Luwak, and Other Stuff
I was going to write an essay about Walter Cronkite today. It was going
to be an open letter to the dearly departed bastion of real, authentic
news. “Dear Walter: You would not believe what’s going on in the world
these days – you’re probably turning over in your grave…” But then I
thought, what’s going on in the world these days isn’t funny, and no
matter which side you’re on, you’ll be ridiculed by the other as no one
can get along anymore.
I decided to watch a movie instead of getting into the crazy world of
journalism or lack thereof in a world that got really weird really fast.
Happy New Year 2020!
A couple of weeks ago I found “The Bucket List” on one of my streaming
apps – it was free. That’s always a big selling point with me these days
when my income has dropped to the point where people on unemployment
make more than I do – and I have all this wit! Wit is not worth doodly
squat anymore. I use to think witty = $. But I got a big surprise.
Anyway… as I am so often wont to say… this was a long, but entertaining
way to tell you that I watched “The Bucket List” a couple of weeks ago.
“The Bucket List” stars two of my favorites, Jack and Morgan. If you
don’t know Jack and Morgan, look up “The Bucket List” (Jack & Morgan),
“A Few Good Men” (Jack), “The Shawshank Redemption” (Morgan). If you
don’t know what those are, look up “Movies”.
In the movie “The Bucket List”, Jack plays Edward Cole, who is a
sarcastic, narcissistic, egocentric, rich guy who loves Kopi luwak. Kopi
luwak is a type of coffee. Jack (Edward) is constantly brewing it and
talking about it throughout the course of the movie.
I’ve lived for many decades but there are at least two things I never
knew...

Take a Byte
TB stands for terabyte; GB stands for gigabyte; MB stands for
megabyte; and KB stands for kilobyte. EB stands for Eightball - and
she has an overbite.
A byte is a single bit of information. A zero; a one, an on, an off
-- you know just arcane geeky stuff like that.
A kilobyte is 1024 bytes. A megabyte is 1,024,000 bytes. A gigabyte
is 1,073,741,824 bytes. A terabyte is 1,099,511,627,776 bytes.
That's generally the accepted definition. However, when talking
about storage devices like hard drives and external drives, it gets
a little simpler. For this purpose a kilobyte is 1000 bytes, a
megabyte is 1,000,000 bytes, and a gigabyte is 1,000,000,000 and a
terabyte is 1,000,000,000,000 bytes.
And now, before we byte off more than we can chew, we're going to
end this right here so we don't take up more bytes on your hard
drive.
