Some browsers, Google Chrome for instance, have a built-in spell checkers. Others, like Internet Explorer, don’t. Why on Earth would you need a spell checker in a browser? Let us count the ways:
Web Mail
Web support forms
Facebook wall posts
Forum posts
Letters to the editor – based on Web forms
Web forms
Social Networking pages and posts
If you use Internet Explorer and you post on Web sites, social networking sites, use support forms, etc. then your misspellings will not be corrected. You may find it odd that we’re pointing this out, but do as we say, not as we do :-).
If you’re using Internet Explorer 9 and you like it, then you’ll be interested in Speckie – a spell-checker for Internet Explorer 9 (and IE 7 and IE 8 too). Speckie runs on Windows XP, Vista, and Windows 7 32-bit and 64-bit. As far as we know, it’s the only spell-checker that works with Internet Explorer 9.
So if you use Internet Explorer 9 and you want to make a good impression, and you want all your site postings and Web form submissions to be free of spelling errors, you should take a look at Speckie.
Speckie is a free spell-checker for Internet Explorer 9. If you happen to be using IE7 or IE8 you can use Speckie too, if you like. It’s a 1.2MB download – and it’s free. Â It works on 32bit and 64bit Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 computers. You can read more about it here – http://www.speckie.com/ . Or go directly to the download page here – http://www.speckie.com/dload/
I am using windows mail and Speckie looks good will it work in windows mail. Thank you for all the good tips you send us.
I’ve been looking for a spell checker as the one I have is old and outdated. I downloaded a program named “Dictionary Boss” It was picked up as spyware by my anti-virus program. I noticed that the download page for this download also has the same name Dictionary Boss. Am I confusing this program with another one? I quess what I’m asking is this program Speckie the same as Dictionary Boss?
I don’t know – we’ve never recommended any program with that name. We continue to recommend IESpell – which is not spyware or adware – and which is free. We’ve featured it a number of times both in our newsletters. We’ve also featured a newer one called Speccie which works in IE7, IE8 and IE9. You can read about it here.
You have to be careful when you search for things because spyware and adware companies have more money than independent programmers who offer their good products free out of their own generosity or in order to have their programming skills recognized. There are more and more bundled programs and spyware and worse out there right now and you really have to be careful you download only from trusted sources – and on non-paid recommendations by sites and companies such as ours. We don’t accept payments for recommending software – even though we really could use the money 🙂
