Hi, TC & Darcy, Please bear with an elderly lady who has only been using Windows for a year. Learning isn’t as easy as it once was. My year old HP laptop has Intel(R) Celeron(R) N4120 CPU @ 1.10GHz 1.10 GHz 16.0 GB (15.8 GB usable). I’m repeatedly getting a message that more memory is required to install the update. It says to add an external drive that can be removed once the update is complete. I have an external drive, NexStar*TX, that I used for my 11 year old Mac. What do I need to do to use this drive safely? Or should I just buy a new external drive?

I’ve never heard of this before. 16 GB of installed Memory is quite sufficient and more than most people have. Your memory is certainly not limiting you from updating. Adding an external drive would not add more memory (theoretically it allows Windows to create more virtual memory, but with 15.8 GB of usable installed memory this doesn’t make sense. What update are you trying to install? Something does not sound right here.

Hi, TC & Darcy. Thank you for your patience with me and my issue. You ROCK!!
There have been multiple attempts to install the update. I agree that 15.8 GB usable memory should be sufficient.

        Windows 11, version 24H2
We temporarily need more space to install your updates. Please remove some things you don’t need right now and we’ll try again.

I removed a lot of unused files and emptied a storage bin of deleted files. It still shows that I don’t have enough disk space. And under System > Storage I found Windows (C:) – 51.7 GB used with 5.49 GB free. I don’t know if you can make sense of this. I’m baffled.

Hi TC & Darcy, thank you for your quick reply. It’s a small gray pop-up in the lower right corner of my screen that says Windows is trying to update, but needs more disk space. I agree that something doesn’t sound right. So far, I have just dismissed it when it pops up. I really appreciate your expertise and willingness to help us older people out. My “tech support” grew up and started her own life. lol
