Windows Mail in Windows 7 and Windows 8

By | July 14, 2012

Every Windows 7 computer has Windows Mail (not to be confused with the clunky Windows Live Mail) installed on it. However, the program is disabled by some slick slight of hand by the folks at Microsoft who claimed they were worried about European anti-trust suits should they include an email program in Windows 7. It sounds like baloney to us. If they were worried about antitrust suits – they’d have left Internet Explorer off — not Windows Mail.

After many attempts to find a 100% foolproof way to get Windows Mail to work on Windows 7 (and Windows 8) — we finally did it. And let me tell you that we’ve been using Windows Mail for a few days now and it’s such a sweet email program — it really does put everything else to shame.

Unlike the clunky Windows Live Mail – which seems to load slowly and crash often – Windows Mail uses very little system resources, loads instantly, and has so many features. It’s such a joy to have it back.

If you’re a skeptic and don’t think it’s possible — here’s a screen shot of Windows Mail running on Windows 8 RP”

EB is using Windows Mail on Windows 7 and I’m using it on Windows 8 — and all we can say is we’re glad we found a way — because we missed Outlook Express / Windows Mail – it’s so good to have it back again.

And if you’re using Windows 7 (or Windows 8 RP) you can have it back too. We can make the magic happen for you. See http://thundercloud.net/direct/winmail.htm  for details.

I installed Windows Mail on my Windows 7 computer a couple of years ago but gave it up because Microsoft would not allow it to be updated. When I tried to install an update it resulted in a message that said the update was not appropriate for that operating system. Have you resolved that issue or do you consider updating the program a non-issue?

You can’t install Windows Mail on a Windows 7 computer — it’s already there. There are no updates for Windows Mail — and haven’t been since 2007. So I’m not sure where the message came from — so not sure what issue you’re referring to.

Some of us who could not get Outlook and/or Windows Mail when Windows 7 was launched on new machines, went to IncrediMail as their email program. I love some of the features on IncrediMail but still have reservations as to how secure this program is. There was some controversy over spyware, malware, etc., being hidden in this program but that was some time ago and so far I have had no problems with it. Having said all this, would you personally end this program and go back to Windows Mail? I don’t know which way to turn on this one. Thanks for all you and EB do for us out here.

I was wondering if you can make a CD (software) that can be inserted and unlock the windows mail? That way we could purchase the software and unlock or install the program ourselves and if we do need to reformat and set our computers back to a previous day, we could install this ourselves. You could still charge a fair price for the software. Thank you for the wonderful tips you have given us over the past years.

No. We not only activate Windows Mail — we configure it and optimize it. There are too many variables to automated the process.

That is good news but I’m not sure about having to pay for it.
Recently I requested you have a look at a free Email Program that I found called “dreammail”
I haven’t seen anything about it on your website so far and I’m wondering if this is the reason.
I’ve tried many email programs to no avail, until I found this one, and this one I like with a capital L.
It resembles O/E and Win/Mail and is loaded with goodies that are easy to use, very intuitive.
Sadly It seems everything is about money these days…

IncrediMail intentionally prohibits you from exporting email messages and contacts — in order to lock you into using IncrediMail. The only way you can export messages from IncrediMail is by buying a program to convert them to EML format. IncediMail is again bordering on spyware/adware and nuisance-ware.

I managed to activate Windows Mail on my friend’s laptop which is programmed with Vista. She is thrilled. Am now waiting to hear if TC and EB can activate my Windows 7 version as I am in Australia
