Dear Darcy: I want to heartily thank you for your superb customer service and your generous offer of a no cost installation of FolderMagic that has successfully resolved the issues I was having with implementing the free trial version. After years of using FolderMagic and your gorgeous Cloudeight email stationery, your response reaffirms my conviction that your website is one of the best

Thanks so much, Bill. Your kind letter made our day! Thank you very much for taking time to write. TC & EB

A comment from Kathleen
I have just had a session with Darcy. I can only say this Lady is the absolute BEST! Watching her fly around on my computer is just plain fun. Thank You Darcy and I mean that from the bottom of my heart!

A comment from Nancy
I need to take this opportunity to thank Darcy the work she's done to make my computer 'fly' again. It took a couple of days of her time because of some connection issues I was experiencing, but I couldn't be happier. I would never hesitate to ask for this service again, so my extreme thanks for making this old gal a happy camper!

A comment from Laurie
Thundercloud: Just a note to tell you how happy I am with your 'clean-up' service on my computer. This is the 2nd time I have had you 'bail me out', and figured it was about time I said 'THANK YOU' publicly. I have one repair key left so I'm sure I'll be 'talking to you' again. I have complete confidence in you and your 'boss' Eightball. LOL. Thanks again..Laurie

A comment from Clara
Well, after checking one of my laptops & getting the go ahead to install Windows 10, TC was finally able to connect with my other laptop. He knew just what I had to do to be able to connect & take over my laptop. What patience he has!! I did exactly what he told me to do & I now have Windows 10 on my two (2) laptops. TC tried so hard to connect with the 2nd pc, but it wasn't his fault. I ended up having a corrupt user account & had to do a factory reset. Another job well done, TC! Thank you so much!!

A comment from Jim
Just want to thank Darcy for the quick an efficient restoring of my Windows Mail after I installed Windows 10. Thanks Darcy.

Thanks so much to Kathleen, Nancy, Laurie, Clara, Jim and to all the other who wrote about our Cloudeight Direct Computer Care Services. We appreciate your nice comments and your support! TC & EB

Earl wants to know how to tell if he has 32-bit or 64-bit Windows 7
First , thanks to both of you for all you do! I would never have tried so many different things with my computer if it wasn't for you! Your newsletter is the BEST anywhere. My question is: Do I have 32-bit or 64-bit? How do I tell? I am sure you have covered this before, but I just can't seem to find the info. Thanks!

Our Answer
Thanks Earl. Here's the fastest, easiest way to see whether you're using 32-bit of 64-bit Windows (there are many other ways, too).

1. Press and hold down the Windows Key while pressing the Pause/Break key
2. Look next to "System type" - it will say 32-bit or 64-bit operating system there. You can also find out other information about your computer from there like how much installed RAM you have.

If you prefer you can also get to the same dialog by right-clicking on My Computer, Computer,, or This PC (in Windows 8.x) and selecting "Properties".

Hope this helps you, Earl.

Marlene asks about VLC
My friend just told me about a free program called VLC and sent me here: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.html  have you heard of it? and is it indeed "free", REALLY? Thanks, Marlene

Our answer
Hi Marlene. VLC is free and it's one of the best multi-media players you'll find any where. It's often recommended as a replacement for Windows Media Player. We've used it and we have it installed. It's free and works well with all types of media files. If you're looking for a free media player, you can't do better than VLC. It has a great reputation. VLC also works great on Windows 10.

If you're looking for an alternative, check out our freeware pick "5KPlayer".

Kevin is looking for a tablet computer with HDMI and a SD-card reader
Hi TC&EB I'm looking for a tablet 10.0" with micro HDMI and card reader. Do you have any idea what brand would be a good one? I have done some research but there are so many out there, and a lot of them I never heard of before.

Our answer
We have some experience with both iPads and Android tablets. One of the shortcomings of iPads is the lack of expandable storage, but there are SD-Card kits for iPad, but as far as we know you won't find an iPad with a built-in SD-card reader.

So, we did some searching and we think your best bet is a Samsung Galaxy Tab which you can get for less than $300. It has a USB port, HDMI port and a built-in SD-card reader. The Galaxy Tab is an Android-based tablet which give you plenty of options as far as games and apps you can download for it. Not as many as iPad offers, but probably more than you'll ever need. TC has a Galaxy Tab and he's very happy with it.

You can buy Samsung Galaxy Tabs at Wal*Mart, Best Buy, and other retailers. You can also get them online at Amazon and other online stores.

Also there are many bargain Android tablets available too, some for less than $100. Be sure to look at the specs carefully to make sure they have an HDMI output and SD-Card reader - not all do.

Diane has Emsisoft Anti-Malware (and antivirus) installed and wants to know if she still needs other security software
I have Emsisoft installed on my Dad and his friend's computers. Do I still need Super AntiSpyWare and Malwarebytes? I'd love to be able to rely entirely on the Emsisoft. Thanks for being the voice of reason, kindness and integrity in this business.

Our answer
No you don't need either SUPER AntiSpyWare or Malwarebytes. Emsisoft will protect your computer from spyware, adware, viruses, Trojans, and other types of malware including PUPs (Potentially Unwanted Programs). We have found that Malwarebytes while once very effective has become unreliable and ineffective in many cases. We know this because we've worked on dozens of computer supposedly protected by Malwarebytes that are full of malware and we had to remove it.

Emsisoft Anti-Malware will keep your computer free from all types of malware and viruses. But no program is perfect, you still need to exercise reasonable caution when you're on the Web - and this is true no matter what security software you install. Emsisoft is simply the best we've tested and we rely on it to protect our personal and work computers.

Walter can't install Windows 10 because his processor doesn't support NX
When trying to upgrade my Sony Vaio PCV RS630G computer from Windows 7 I received the message: You can't install Windows 10 because your processor doesn't support NX. What does this mean and how do I correct it? Respectfully, Walter

Our answer
Hi Walter. Both Windows 8x and Windows 10 require a processer that is NX capable. Without getting technical, NX is a security feature (it stands for "No Execute" found in most newer processors. Neither Windows 8x or Windows 10 will run on computers with processors which do not support NX.

On many newer computers you can turn NX on/off in BIOS settings, however processors in most older Sony VAIO computers do not have an NX flag in the BIOS and therefore you can't turn it on or off. Each brand of computer, and sometimes different models of the same brand of computer have different methods of accessing the BIOS settings. Check with Sony's Web site to see how to access the BIOS settings in your Sony VAIO. Once in the BIOS settings, you can try accessing your BIOS and looking for the NX flag under the security tab in the BIOS. If you find it you may see an ON/OFF setting. If you do, turn it on, save your settings, and exit the BIOS. Turn off your computer and start it normally. Keep in mind man older processors do not support NX (or XD in Intel processors). If your processor does not support NX (or XD) you won't find a NX (or XD) setting in the BIOS.

If your processor does not support NX (or XD) you can't fix it or change anything to make it work. You can upgrade your processor and/or motherboard, but keep in mind that a new processor and/or motherboard + processor is more expensive than a new computer in many case. Advice: Buy a new laptop for $300 or less rather than spending $100-$200 on new processor or motherboard with processor. Installing a processor or motherboard is a lot more difficult than installing RAM or a new hard drive. So you may have to add to the cost of the motherboard/processor, the service charges for someone to install it.

Sony VAIO is one of the computer brands/models that seems to be most difficult to upgrade to Windows 10. Our feeling is that your processor is older and doesn't support NX.

Gene says: Whoa! You recommend Chrome but Emsisoft Blocks It....
I have heard a lot about Chrome, so I decided to try it. But when I try to download it to my PC, it was blocked by Emsisoft; any suggestions? I would like to try this browser. Thanks.

Our answer
Hi Gene. That's impossible. Emsisoft does not and would not block Chrome. What has happened to you is the same thing that has happened to many folks. We think what happened was you searched for Google Chrome download and what showed up first on search results were paid advertisements, disguised to look like the real Google Chrome download site. These kinds of ads are paid for by malware companies and shyster outfits who prey on folks looking for legitimate products - like Google Chrome.  It happens to people looking to download a particular program and it happens to people looking for Microsoft support who get duped into some fake Microsoft support site - which is just a scam. It shouldn't be that way but that's how things work. And it's true whether you use Bing, Yahoo or Google to search.

So what happened in your case was, since you didn't know where to download Chrome, you search for it and paid links showed at the top - bought & paid for my malware distributors and scam artists. The correct download link for Chrome is https://www.google.com/chrome/browser/desktop/index.html .

It is too bad that search results make it so difficult to ferret out the legitimate info from bogus info. In your case, Emsisoft prevented you from installing a malware program on your computer. That's s good thing.

We warn everyone reading this: If you're looking for a particular program or service, be extra careful when you're searching for it. There's a better than even chance that the first few search results will be fakes and should you be fooled into downloading from one of those sites or falling for the Microsoft support scam, you'll be falling into a trap that may be hard to get out of. So be very careful and make sure you're seeing what you think  you see..

Be careful Gene -- download Chrome from the official Google download page . It's a good thing that you had Emsisoft installed; it protected you from the trickery.

(We answered Eugene and he wrote back: "I do thank Emsisoft for blocking the thing and yes, I went to the search and it did lead me to the site which installed the malware. Everything is OK now. I thank you for your help. Gene" )

If you’re upgrading to Windows 10 and you use Emsisoft, heads up!
Windows 7 and Windows 8.1

Most of you know, by now, the Web is abuzz (is that a word, EB?) with misinformation. If you’re planning on upgrading to Windows 10, there’s a good chance you’ve read, in a computer newsletter, a Windows forum, or in a computer magazine, that in order to upgrade to Windows 10, you must uninstall your anti-virus/security software.

We don’t know about the other security programs out there, but we can tell you for sure that if you’re using Emsisoft you DO NOT need to uninstall Emsisoft to upgrade to Windows 10.

We have had a lot of experience helping people to upgrade from Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 with our Get Ready for Windows 10 service, and the majority were using Emsisoft. Emsisoft presented no problems at all for those upgrading to Windows 10.

So, if you’re an Emsisoft user who’s planning on upgrading to Windows 10, ignore the bloggers and tech columnists who caution you to uninstall your antivirus/security software before you upgrade.

We’ve been saying for a long time that Emsisoft is the best antivirus/anti-malware you can use. Not only does Emsisoft provide world-class protection for your computer, it’s also proven itself to be smart and hassle-free.

If you’re planning on upgrading to Windows 10 and you’re an Emsisoft user, you can go ahead and upgrade to Windows 10 without uninstalling Emsisoft.

And if you’re not using Emsisoft, why not? Get more information about Emsisoft here

How to Set Your Taskbar to Show Descriptive Text Along With Icons
Windows 7, Windows 8.x, Windows 10

If you don't have a lot of icons on your taskbar and would like the taskbar to show each item's description as well as its icon, it's easy to do.

Right-click on an empty area of your taskbar, click "Properties" and next to Taskbar buttons choose "Never combine" then press Apply / OK.

Cloudeight InfoAve

Now next to each icon you'll see a text description. Note: If your taskbar contains many icons, this tip won't work very well because the text will be truncated. But if your taskbar only has a few icons, you'll see a full text description next to each icon.

The Right Way to Resize Text in Google Chrome
Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8.x
Chrome Browser Installed

Chrome is getting to be a very popular browser. In fact, this year it passed Internet Explorer as the most popular browser in the world.

So because more and more people are using Chrome, we want to share with you some of the tips that have help us master Chrome. For instance, you can change the size of the text on Web pages without also increasing the size of the page and its other content.

Here’s how:

Click on the settings icon in the top-right corner of Chrome (it looks like three horizontal bars). Now click “Settings” in the menu, then click the “Show advanced settings” link near the bottom of the Settings page. Now scroll down and look for Web Content. Under Web content you’ll fine Font size (see the image below):

Cloudeight InfoAve
You can choose Large or Extra Large. This will not increase the size of images or ads on the page.

If you want a nicer looking layout without any pictures or menus, you can install the Readability Extension for Chrome. Readability will remove all the images and ads from most pages, and just leave the text, which you can easily resize.

Here’s a picture of Readability in action:

Cloudeight InfoAve

Cloudeight InfoAve

The second image was after clicking the Readability button on a Chrome browser with the Readability extension installed. As you can see (and these images are half the original size) the text is much bigger in the second picture than in the first.

If you’re interested in installing Readability (Free) for Chrome, visit http://goo.gl/FrKXm  .

We hope this answers your questions and gives you some other ideas about making text on Web sites viewed in Chrome more readable for you!

This may be just what you’re looking for – we hope so!

Two Amusing & Interesting Sites You'll Want to Bookmark
All computer, tablet and smartphone users

We're not saying these sites are educational, but they're interesting and / or fun. Well, at least we found them interesting and/or fun. We hope you do too!

Dumb Laws
Here's a site that lists some of the dumbest laws ever passed by state and federal (U.S.A.) legislatures. You can view the laws state-by-state if you like. And if you're not in the USA, you can sit back and laugh at the goofiness that prevails in American law.

In EB's home state, for example:

A woman isn’t allowed to cut her own hair without her husband’s permission.

It is legal for a robber to file a law suit, if he or she got hurt in your house.

Persons may not be drunk on trains.

That last one tells you why EB never travels by train. She flies. I've seen her broomstick :-)

By now I'm sure you'll want to verify those Michigan state laws above as well as browse though dumb laws in all fifty states. That might take you a few hours, so you might want to grab a sandwich, something to drink, and get comfortable.

Luckily, for you, it's not yet illegal to visit www.dumblaws.com .

Secrets Explained

Do you believe in magic? Magicians say that good magicians never reveal their secrets. But we are here to tell that's not true. For example, you can learn how David Copperfield made the Statue of Liberty disappear. Well, not really, but created the illusion that it disappeared.

Here's an excerpt from the site - to view the video mentioned, you'll have to visit the site:

"...Of course he didn't really make it disappear. It was a trick, but how was it done? He didn't move the statue, but could he move the audience instead? That seems quite an easy job compared to what he claims he had done. The platform with the audience could easily be turned into a wrong direction without the audience noticing it. When the curtain goes up, the audience is turned so that they cannot see the statue (or maybe they are even stooges and just act to be amazed). In this direction, there are lights set too, but without the statue in the middle. The helicopter moves to the new direction while it is hidden behind the curtain. Then the process is repeated and the platform is turned back so you can see the statue again.

Here is a video explanation of the illusion..."

You'll love this site if you've ever wondered how magicians pull off their seemingly real illusions. I have tried so many times to make EB disappear but I've never been able to pull off that trick. Maybe something on this site will help me do it.

Like magic tricks? Want to know how they're done? Head over to www.secrets-explained.com .

How to Shutdown or Restart Your Computer When You Can't Access Your Start Menu or the Shutdown dialog
Windows 7, Windows 8.x, Windows 10

If you've ever had the unfortunate experience of trying to shutdown or restart your computer when everything seems to be frozen, it can be daunting. One way is to simply power off your computer, but that may result in unexpected problems.

There's another way to shutdown your computer without accessing the Shutdown/Restart dialog, and it's very easy to do.

Just press the Windows Key plus the R key to open a Run Dialog

In the Run dialog:

To shutdown your computer type SHUTDOWN and press enter.

To restart your computer type SHUTDOWN /R  and press enter (Please note the space between SHUTDOWN and the slash.)

So the next time you can shut your computer down the way you normally do, you'll have another option besides powering off your computer.

If You’re Planning On Selling Or Giving Away Your Computer…
All versions of Windows

We've had several folks write to us who are planning to give their computers to churches, friends, and/or family members. They wanted to know how to completely eradicate any personal or sensitive data from their hard drive. So, if you are one of the people who are going to be selling or giving your computer away in the near future, this is for you.

If you’re getting ready to sell or give away a computer there are two things you need to do:

1. Get rid of everything on your hard drive by wiping it with DBAN

2. Reinstall the operating system

You can get Darik’s Boot and Nuke (DBAN) from this link. Here is Darik’s description:

“Darik’s Boot and Nuke (“DBAN”) is a self-contained boot disk that securely wipes the hard disks of most computers. DBAN will automatically and completely delete the contents of any hard disk that it can detect, which makes it an appropriate utility for bulk or emergency data destruction. DBAN is a means of ensuring due diligence in computer recycling, a way of preventing identity theft if you want to sell a computer, and a good way to totally clean a Microsoft Windows installation of viruses and spyware.”

A word of caution:  DBAN will totally obliterate everything on your hard drive and overwrite it with gibberish so nothing can ever be recovered from it even using forensic software. So make sure you’ve saved whatever you want to save before you use DBAN.

If you’re selling or giving away your old computer – it would be nice if you reinstalled Windows before you give it away or sell it. It won’t be of much use to anyone without an operating system on it — unless the person you’re selling it to or giving it to knows it won’t have an operating system. If you don’t have the Windows installation disk, use the manufacturer’s recovery partition to restore the computer to its factory state. Using DBAN only erases the operating system drive, usually C:\.  Most manufacturers create recovery partitions on a separate drive. The separate drive will not be erased by DBAN and therefore the recovery option should still be available. This will return the computer to its factory state; in other words it will be exactly the same as it was the day you bought it (theoretically) .

If you’re not sure how to use your recovery partition, visit your computer manufacturer’s web site and search for “recovery partition”. Maybe that’s something you need to know anyway whether you’re selling your computer, giving it away or keeping it.

I’VE GOT MELONS ON MY MIND

Those of you living in big and sophisticated cities will be astonished to learn that those of us living in more-or-less rural areas of America, get all worked-up about summer festivals. It may seem sad to you, even pathetic, but, alas, it is true.

So far, this summer, in my neck-of-the-woods, we’ve had the Cherry Festival, the Strawberry Festival, The St. Alphonsus Festival, The St. Joseph’s Festival, The Bratwurst Festival, The Sweet Corn Festival, The Blueberry Festival, and many others, which I’ve attended, but have now forgotten.

But, the Super Bowl of Festivals here in Ohio, happens this very weekend in beautiful downtown Milan, Ohio, where they will spend the entire weekend frolicking and celebrating! And the whole shebang is about melons. It’s Melon Festival time, folks! Yes indeedy! The biggest festival of them all is right around the corner, and the whole area around here is all atwitter with excitement. I bet you never thought folks could get all worked up over melons, did you? We’re all worked-up! Bring on the melons!

I’ve got melons on my mind, I tells ya!

Everywhere I go, I see posters, billboards and signs (tacked to telephone poles) reminding me that this is the big weekend. The weekend when the sleepy little village of Milan, Ohio (population 1445) comes alive with festivities to rival New Orleans, New York, San Francisco, San Antonio, and Miami. Swarms of jet-setters and party animals will descend on Milan this weekend to celebrate melons. They expect that over 100,000 revelers will fill the town square over the weekend – dancing, partying, and living it up – and all under the watchful eye of the much celebrated Milan Police Department (MPD) who oversee the biggest speed trap east of the Mississippi.

Let’s get the melons off our mind for just a minute and discuss this speed trap. Melons are big this weekend, but the rest of the year, the only two things famous about Milan is that Thomas Alva Edison was born here, and the Milan speed trap...

Sometimes, even after a decade and a half on the Web, we never fail to be surprised by the good stuff out there. It seems the bad stuff gets all the ink while the good stuff stays hidden until someone ferrets it out. We've been ferretting, I tells ya!

There are very few "all-in-one" things that live up to expectation. Usually when you're dealing with all-in-ones, your getting mediocre - at best - parts that make up a mediocre if not just plain terrible all-in-one.

There are exceptions to every rule, and we're here to tell you about one of them we dug up from the depths of the Internet during one particularly robust ferreting out session.

What would you think of a free web service where you could translate over a dozen languages to and from English? Ah, we know, you're thinking Google Translate - right? Google Translate is really good and does dozens and dozens of languages, but how often do you need to translate Slobovian to English or English to Slobovian. Come on, EB, get real. You don't even know where Slobovia is! Our site pick features a great translation tool that does everything you want it to if you're translating to and from the world's most popular languages such as English, French, Spanish, Russian, Italian -- mama mia! - and so on.

A great alternative translation tool it is, but our site pick is a whole lot more. It's a grammar checker with grammar lessons (if you're so inclined), it's a spell checker, dictionary and more. It's a really useful and terrific all-in-one and one you'd be remiss if you didn't bookmark it.

We were particularly - or at least I was - enamored with the grammar section. And hold your tongues and fingers -- I'm well aware my grammar needs some polishing. Sorry, ladies and gentlemen, I'm too old to dedicate myself to perfect grammar. As long as you gets what I means, ya know, grammar is something I can review for fun later on. I tells ya, I ain't never gonna be no grammar expert no matter how many emails you write complaining about my slaughtering of the English language. However, that being said, I'd like to point out that I'm not totally uncouth or uneducable. I do enjoy reading what the grammar police have to say, and our site pick today has quite a grammar section.

Well, let me just give you some examples from the grammar section that highlight verb conjugation and voice. I don't mean the voice like EB hears when she torments me and tells me a voice told her to hurt me. I mean passive and active voice -- and I'm most guilty of over-using passive voice and I know it. Too bad. What you read is what you get with me, I tells ya!

The active voice is used in most conversational situations. The passive voice is used in explanations, such as this one, where the object (“the passive voice”) is more important than the people who use it. The passive voice is also used a lot in reporting where the agent is unknown, unimportant or purposely kept secret. For example, the following sentences have no agent:
“Bananas are grown in Ecuador.” (The object, “bananas,” is more important than who grows the bananas. We probably don't know who grows the bananas anyway.)

“The diamond was stolen at 4:30a.m.” (We don't know who stole the diamond, so no agent can be included. Even if we did know, the sentence might still be more common in the passive because the fact that a diamond was stolen may be more important than who did it.)

As stated above, “get” is sometimes used in conjunction with the past participle when forming the simple passive voice. Using “get” is a more casual way of making the passive voice. “Get” tends to emphasize the feelings of the speaker as well as process, whereas “be” emphasizes neutrality and state of being. “Get” doesn't take an agent as often as “be” does.

I suppose you grammar girls and boys knew all that, but not yours truly - I'm grammatically challenged and will probably remain that way until they put me in that metal box and send me off to the great newsletter publisher in the sky. No EB, unlike you, I'm not planning on a journey across the River Styx!

Everything you see or hear on the internet is actually on your computer

All your computer-whizz friends probably delight in telling you how having a 'library' of videos is so 2008, that no-one torrents any more, it's all Netflix and iPlayer and 'The Cloud', whatever that means. But, you might want to remind them: every time you stream a video or the week's latest Top 40 off the web, it's actually, technically playing off your computer. See, every internet media file has to make a local copy of itself on your machine, first. Ever wondered what that white buffering bar means on YouTube or Netflix? It's the amount of video that's been copied to the local cache, a.k.a. the amount you can still watch if your internet decides to up and die. (From TechRadar )

50 Best Wallpapers For Windows 10

Windows 10 handles colors a whole new way compared to its predecessors and we’ve touched on how those limitations effect the colors we can choose for the interface, as well as which UI elements we can modify when it comes to customizing it. With limitations like that, it’s rather tricky to find a good wallpaper that will suit the design, and set the right accent colors to go with it. We’ve compiled a list of 50 great wallpapers that pair excellently with Windows 10; you can choose to let the operating system pick an accent color to go with these wallpapers, or you can set a custom color of your own.

The Food Printer proves 3D printing in cookie dough tastes better than plastic

A 3D printer that layers cookie dough instead of plastic will go on sale in Asia next year and later in the U.S. and Europe pending regulatory approval.

The Food Printer from Taiwan's XYZ Printing will cost around $1,800.

The printer works in a similar way to a traditional printer by layering dough, but what it prints isn't edible. It's printed on a piece of parchment paper and then needs to be baked in an oven before being eaten.

The machine can accommodate up to three tubes of printing product. They can be filled with a cookie dough-like mixture, chocolate or supplies to print a pizza. In that case the tubes would be filled with pizza dough, tomato sauce and cheese sauce.

The unit has about two dozen preset designs, but bakers can add more via a USB port.

The developers are targeting commercial users instead of consumers first and said they need to see where the most demand is.
