A comment from Jason
(Jason is commenting on our tip "Windows 10  Start Menu - Alphabetically Speaking) If I had my Staples "That Was Easy" button with me, I would have pressed it. Great time saver tip. Thank you.

A comment from Martha
Thank you Darcy and TC, for everything you do help everyone who asks for help. I can't even count the number of times I've written to you and gotten help. And that does not include the times you've come to my rescue and repaired my computer with your excellent service. I've learned so much from you two and your newsletters. As a senior, I REALLY appreciate your help and guidance, and suggestions.  Thank you for over 10 years of help. You've never let me down. Martha.

A comment from Colin
I just want to say thanks very much to Darcy for helping me out in checking my old computer out and installing the Ashampoo Back Up which will, I am sure, give me peace of mind regarding security of tenure to my precious music files. I have been connected with Cloudeight through their newsletters for some time now and have always found both Darcy and TC to be the epitome of courtesy and efficiency whenever I have had a need for help. Good on you both. Colin.

A comment from Barb
I am again indebted to Darcy. When I went to bed, Thunderbird was in a mess. When I got up it was back to normal. Darcy had used an unattended session to weave her magic. The unattended session is another of Cloudeight's brilliant innovations. You don't have to be there, but Darcy or T.C. will be, and your computer will be fixed. Where else could you find an affordable service like this. Grateful thanks, Darcy. Barb.

A comment from Pete
I have used the Cloudeight Direct services 3 times now over the past 3 years (laptop and 2 desktops). Every single time I've used your services I've always received, professional and friendly service. Darcy and TC have both worked on my computers and both are highly skilled and very friendly. I highly recommend their services. They are the best! Pete

A big Cloudeight "Thank you!" to Jason, Martha, Colin, Barb, Pete  and everyone who took time out to write to us this week. We appreciate your kind words and your support very much! EB & TC

Debbie wants to know if she can install programs on another drive
I have a desktop with an 120 GB SSD hard drive & 2 TB regular hard drive. Windows 10 is on the SSD drive and I was wondering if I can install programs on the regular hard drive and if they would work, in the conjunction with the SSD drive if they needed files from the operating system. I hope I explained this correctly so you could understand it. Thank you in advance!

Our answer
Hi Debbie. You can install programs on any drive you want to. If the other drive is an internal hard drive, you can install programs, use it for storage for documents, etc. just like the C drive. You cannot do this if the drive is an external (USB) drive

Keep in mind that some programs will install to the C:\ drive without giving you an option or prompting you on where you want it installed, so sometimes you will not have a choice..

Also, In "Settings > System > Storage > "Change where new content is saved" there are options to save new apps, new documents, new music, new photos, new movies, and offline maps to a location other than C: drive. You have a lot of options including where to install apps, where to save documents, pictures, music, etc. See?

Cloudeight InfoAve

If you set that up correctly, you should have a lot easier time of making good use of your 2 TB regular drive. You'll definitely want to save your documents, pictures, and music there - they can be real HD space hogs.

Sounds like you have a great computer!

Hope this helps you, Debbie.

Diane's friend has fallen for a tech support  scam
I’m hoping to find out maybe tomorrow for myself!! Claiming she’s locked out of her computer & needs to call a number on the screen...so far she knows that’s not to happen. I gave her some of your paper work, also info to get a ‘key’ once she gets loose. Tonight I thought it was her internet..she did check it & found a bad cable, so I await her call. I really pushed her and even guaranteed Cloudeight is super great.

Our answer
Hi Diane. It sounds like your friend encountered an ad for a tech  support scam. Make sure she doesn't call the number on the screen and especially never let someone like that connect to her computer remotely.

Here's what she needs to do:  First, if she has not already done so, she needs to try the CTRL+F4 keyboard shortcut to close the browser tab displaying the ad for the tech support scam. If that does not work, have her shut down her computer completely. Hold the power button down for 10 to 30 seconds - until all lights are off (power light/hard drive light, etc.). Leave the computer off for 2 or 3 minutes and then power it back on. If  after she powers up her computer and  opens her browser it asks if she wants to reopen the pages that were open, she needs to say no - and not allow the browser to reopen the pages that were open when she shutdown.  This is important since one of the pages that would be opened would be the tech support scam advertisement.

Ann hears bad things about Google and wants advice
I hear a lot about Google and most is not good, so if I want to drop Google what is a good browser that is easy to use when you're old lol?

Our answer
Hi Ann. Much of the bad press Google has gotten lately is political - not necessarily fact. But we're not going to comment on the political press.

Google doesn't do anything that Apple hasn't been doing for years as far as collecting and monetizing user data and information - and Microsoft's new model of Windows as a service is, let's face it, is using the Apple and Google data monetizing model.

Google is a company with a lot of products like Chrome, Gmail, Google search, Google Play, Google Drive, Chromebook, Android, Pixel (cellphone), etc. . If you're talking about browsers, then you're talking about Chrome - if you personally don't like Chrome there are many alternatives: Firefox, Opera, Vivaldi, Microsoft Edge, Internet Explorer, and others. If you're talking about search, you have choices as well, for instance Yahoo (which has many more problems than Google) and Bing (a Microsoft product). In our experience Bing is inferior to Google the search results you get. There are many smaller search engines too, some of them you have to be careful with - like Ask.com which is owned by a company that has created a lot of questionable software over the years.

There is nothing wrong with using Google products. We use Chrome, Gmail, Google Drive and Google search because they work for us. If you personally don't like Google products then you have a plenty of alternatives.

We hope this helps you.

Derek has a problem at Windows 10 Startup
Hello you wonderful people. Since the last upgrade to Win 10 when I open my computer a notice opens saying it cannot access a program ( C:\ Program Files \WindowsApps\ 21090PaddyXu.QuickLook_3.6.3.0_neutral_egxr34yet59cg....). Is this serious? A and how can I remove or fix it/ Kind Regards. Derek

Our answer
Hi Derek. Thanks! From what I can tell this is a Windows app that you installed and it set to start with Windows. But it appears it's no longer working.

If I'm guessing right, you installed a Windows app called QuickLook which is a app that is supposed to add Apple Mac-like  features to Windows 10. It's from GitHub (now a Microsoft site). You can read more about it here. Apparently, you're getting this error message because QuickLook was set to start with Windows, but Windows can't find it or  encountering a problem when it tries to start the program. You should be able to remove it from your startups by using Task Manager > Startup tab.

Look at your Windows apps on your start menu for anything you don't recognize, right-click and choose "Uninstall". You can also use HiBit Uninstaller or Geek Uninstaller to try to remove it.

These are my best guesses. And they are only guesses since I've never encountered QuickLook before -and I can't examine your computer to see for myself what's going on.

Please let us know if this helps you.

--- Derek wrote back: "Hello TC; Thank you for your advice. I found GitHub and removed it with RegOrganizer. I restarted the computer and the notice has gone. I then downloaded HiBit and cleaned up a few more rarely used progammes. What a great service you provide. Another donation on its way. Best Wishes Derek"

Madonna wants to know what programs are safe to disable in Windows Startups
To stop so many programs from start up how do you know which ones that are safe to disable? Would this something you have a list of so we don’t have something to stop our Windows 10 computer from starting? Love your newsletter and tell my friends about it. Have a great day and many thanks. Madonna R

Our answer
Hi Madonna. Thanks so much for your kind words and for telling your friends about us. We appreciate it.

Every computer is different. Each computer manufacturer has different startups. So we can't send you a list and tell you to disable this one or that one. Generally you can use Task Manager / Startup tab to disable most startup. Still you have to be careful you don't disable your antivirus or your printer. If you have a backup program installed like Ashampoo, you won't want to disable that.

If you stick with using Task Manager > Startups (and not some advance startup program like AutoRuns) and you don't disable your printer or your antivirus (security) software, you should be OK.

We can tell you don't need things like Skype, Email programs, browsers, Garmin, Tom Tom, iTunes, CCleaner and/or any graphics programs (like Photoshop or Corel) starting with Windows. Generally speaking, anything that can be opened easily with a shortcut or from the start menu doesn't need to start with Windows.

We hope this helps you.

Carolyn's Windows 10 computer updated and user account turned up missing
My husband has a laptop that he does not use regularly. He turned it on today and Windows did an update. We were both users on that laptop. NOW The only user that appears is me. How do we get it back the way it was with both users?

Our answer
Hi Carolyn. What kind of Update? Version update? If it's a version update you can roll back to the previous version of Windows 10 by going to Settings > Update & Security > Recovery > Go back to the previous version of Windows.

What happens if you press Windows Key + L. How many accounts to you see on that screen?

I've heard a lot of things happening when Windows updates, but I've never heard of it wiping out a user account. If this was not a version update, you won't have the option to roll back to the previous version. And if a user account was wiped out, you're not going to get it back. But you can create a new user account and import files from the old user account (assuming the old account is still in C:\Users\Name of lost account. However this will not bring back the programs that were install - all programs would have to be reinstalled if you created a new user account and imported data.

But before you do anything, try Windows Key + L to bring up the login screen.

Let us know what you find out.

--- Carolyn wrote back: "Thank you so much, The Windows(key) plus L did the trick. You have come to our aid again. I knew I could depend on you. You are my HERO."

Bryan wants to sync all his devices
I have a cell phone, an Android Tablet and a (Windows) laptop and would like to sync them together maybe through the 'cloud' but haven't a clue as to how this can be done. How can his be achieved? Kind regards and thanks a lot for your help over many years - Bryan (N.Z.)

Our answer
Hi Bryan. Thanks so much.

Since you already have Gmail and therefore a Google account, you can sync bookmarks, mail and files with your Google account. All you need to do is turn on Syncing on - on all your devices ( your computer, your phone and your tablet). You can upload pictures, documents and other files to Google Drive. Google gives you 15 GB of free "cloud" drive space. Your Gmail and your bookmarks will automatically be share.

In Gmail click on Settings icon and turn on Sync... it's right at the top when you open Settings.

Cloudeight InfoAve

In Windows 10 Version 1809 (October 2018 Update) there will be a feature in Settings to sync your Android phone with your PC with just a click.

I hope this helps you, Bryan.

Windows USB Troubleshooter
Windows 7, Windows 8x and Windows 10 (all versions)

Cloudeight InfoAve Windows Tips & Tricks

Sometimes USB devices have problems and when it happens it can be frustrating. We're big fans of choosing the simplest fix first. Why? Because it saves time. If the simplest fix doesn't work, then you'll still have the opportunity to roll up your sleeves dig down and look at other things that may be causing USB issues -  like drivers and USB Controllers (in Device Manager).

But today, we're going suggest the easy way and tell you about Microsoft's Windows USB Troubleshooter. All you have to do is download and run it - and let it do its magic.

It's particularly good at fixing the problem where Windows "Safely remove hardware and eject media" is not working correctly. If that happens, you may not be able to safely eject a USB device from your computer. You may see a notice the USB device isn't detected or that the device is currently in use when it isn't.

The Windows USB Troubleshooter was made to diagnose and repair USB problems like the ones mentioned and others. According to Microsoft the USB Troubleshooter was create to work with USB audio, storage, and print devices—such as thumb drives, USB hard drives, and USB printers—that do not eject using the Safely Remove Hardware dialog box.

You can download Windows USB Troubleshooter from Microsoft from this link. The file name is "WinUSB.diagcab". All you have to do is download it and run it.

If you have your settings have been changed so Windows is not automatically updating device drivers, you will see a popup when running the Troubleshooter than you need to allow driver updates. You'll have a choice of changing your settings to allow driver updates via Windows update, or "Continue" and update drivers without changing your settings. I like to keep my drivers updated myself and have them turned off in Windows Update, so I chose "Continue"

When the USB Troubleshooter finishes, you'll get a Troubleshooting report that shows you a list of any issues that were found and repaired. The Troubleshooter will also show you a list of potential issues that were checked.

The Windows USB Troubleshooter works on Windows 7, Windows 8x and Windows 10 (all versions).

File Explorer’s Tiny Buttons
Windows 10 (all versions)

First. a big thanks to Ron E. for suggesting this tip.  It’s something that very few people know is there, but it’s something almost everyone will want to use.

Here’s Ron’s tip:

"You can change the content look of your folder from lists to icons. In the lower right hand corner of your open folder, there are 2 very small boxes. Click the right one and you get to see the content in icons. Clicking one the left one converts it back to lists. It is a way of breaking up the boredom of searching through lists. ( They are not called icons but I forgot what they are called.)"

We don’t know what the official name is either, Ron. When Microsoft uses the word “Dehydration” to describe the process of deleting local copies of files in One Drive, that gives us a lot of latitude. So, our new official name for them is: File Explorer’s tiny buttons.

They’re tiny – almost unnoticeable – but they can change the look of your folder content from List view to Large icon view and back with just a click.

Cloudeight Windows 10 Tips and Tricks

Here, we’ll show you. Open File Explorer (Windows Key + E) and follow along with us.

Above… there  they are – File Explorer’s tiny buttons.

Cloudeight Windows 10 Tips and Tricks

Above: Clicking on the tiny button on the left, change the File Explorer view to “List (details)” view.

And below, you can see that clicking on the tiny button on the right changes the File Explorer view to “Large icon” view. See?

Cloudeight Windows 10 Tips and Tricks

Now anytime you’re viewing files and folders in File Explorer, you can use File Explorer’s tiny buttons to switch back and forth between List view and Large Icon view.

We never knew tiny buttons could do such big things.

Thanks Ron. Great tip!

How to Recover Missing Bookmarks in Chrome After a Chrome Update
Windows 7, Windows 8x, Windows 10 (all versions)
Chrome browser

Marjorie, one of our Cloudeight subscriber, alerted us to this problem that has plagued many Chrome user. It seems that when Chrome updates it sometimes removes all the user's bookmarks. We checked on this phenomenon and found that's it more common than we thought.

Luckily, Chrome automatically creates a backup of your bookmarks every time you open Chrome; they're saved in a file called bookmarks.bak. We were able to help Marjorie recover her bookmarks.

If a Chrome update wipes our your bookmarks, you can get them back. Here's how:

First, make sure you are able to view hidden files and folders in Windows. See our tutorial here if you're not sure how to do this.

Once you're able to view hidden files and folders here's what you need to do:

1. Make sure that Google Chrome is closed.

2. Open File Explorer (Windows Key + E) and navigate to:

C:\Users\NAME\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default

(note: for NAME you will need to substitute your Windows User Name)

3. In that folder you'll see two files: Bookmarks and Bookmarks.bak. The latter one is the most recent backup that Chrome created the very last time you opened the browser.

Cloudeight InfoAve Chrome tips & tricks

4. Rename the Bookmarks file to Bookmarks.old and then rename Bookmarks.bak to Bookmarks.

5. Close File Explorer.

6. Open Chrome

Now all your bookmarks should be back in Chrome.

Right-click a download link

If you click on a download link the download will start and it will save to your default download location. But what happens if you try to download a PDF file? Normally, if you click a link to a PDF file, the file opens in your browser. Of course, after it does, you can save it to your computer. But what if you just want to download the PDF file?

In Chrome or Firefox, right-click the download link and choose “Save link as”. A File Explorer (Windows Explorer) window will open and you can  choose where to save the file – you’ll even be able to rename it.

In Internet Explorer or Edge, right-click the download link and choose “Save target as”.

Ventusky: An Amazing Weather App

It’s the weekend again… so I went looking for something different, and I came up with an amazing  weather app called Ventusky. Why do they call it Ventusky? We’ll get to that in a minute.

There are weather apps and then there are weather apps, but I’ve never seen a weather app like Ventusky. You can see the weather, anywhere in the world, come alive in colorful animated visualizations that you can zoom in and out.

You can view the weather anywhere in the world – or the whole world at once You can view the map by specifying what you want to look at – such as temperature, thunderstorms. snow cover, wind speed, barometric pressure, the freezing level, the and many more. Are you a Fahrenheit(°F) or a Celsius (°C) person? You’ll be happy that Ventusky lets you choose between them.

I spent over an hour viewing the animated maps and visualizations – it fascinated me. II particularly like the viewing the temperature, freezing level, and winds. The jet stream maps were also fascinating. But rather than trying to describe to you all you can do with Ventusky, you’ll see very quickly how much you can do just by visiting Ventusky. Once  you visit, you’ll quickly learn how to use the various viewing options and how to zoom in and out on the maps and more – it’s all very intuitive.

Also, you can view weather data from the past as well as current data – and look ahead with forecasts for anywhere in the world. You and zoom in and zoom out on an interactive, animated map.

I’ve reviewed a lot of weather apps – but I’ve never seen anything as fun, as educational and as comprehensive as Ventusky.

OK you’re wondering why they call it Ventusky? Ventusky is a creative combination of the Latin word for wind – “ventus” – and the English word “sky”. Pretty clever.

Meteorological visualizations and weather predication is the focus of Ventusky. But do I think Ventusky  is going to take the place of your good old Accuweather or Weather.com apps?. I really doubt it. But if you’re  looking for an amazing and comprehensive worldwide weather site,  one with magnificent animated visualizations of the weather anyplace on earth, you’re going to really like Ventusky.

Ventusky works in all major browsers, including Chrome, Internet Explorer, Opera, Firefox, Safari, and Microsoft Edge. If you don’t use any of those, I’d be willing to bet it works in whatever browser you do use.

OK enough – you get the idea.  Here are a few words from the developers.

…The Earth’s weather functions as an interdependent system. For example, a hurricane in the Atlantic has the ability to influence the distribution of pressure formations in Europe. Occasionally, it may even make its way to Europe itself as a post-tropical storm. The Ventusky application allows for the illustration of the interdependence of the entire system, displaying the development of pressure, wind, cloud cover, precipitation, and temperature on the map.

For visualisation of wind data, we utilise current lines that are used to illustrate the movement of particles in liquids. Air and liquid have many similar physical properties, and, as published by Fernanda Viégas and Martin Wattenber (Hint.fm, 2012), current lines are suitable for illustrating wind as well. Because of this, the map depicts wonderful formations illustrating pressure lows that draw in the air around them. We have created an entirely new system of displaying waves. Through the use of animated arcs, our visualisation clearly differentiates the direction of movement and height of both wind waves and swells. For the other meteorological elements, we chose colour scales that appropriately illustrate precipitation, air pressure, and temperature. The colours correspond with the feeling that the given weather phenomena evokes in us. For temperature, blue illustrates cool weather while dark red depicts hot desert air…

S*pam is Fun!
Note: Please don’t try this at home. This is only for goofy people like me to try. If you read this and follow my example, you’ll probably only end up wasting time and getting more s*pam. Therefore this warning: If you follow my example you do so at your own peril.  (Was that a good enough warning, EB? You’re so fussy!)
I’ve come to the point in my life where my brain is losing cells faster than my body can replace them. This leaves me particularly vulnerable to falling in love with strange things like watching “House” and reading s*pam. I find myself waking up in the morning and rushing to the computer (not even stopping by the coffee pot first) to see how much s*pam arrived over night. I am never disappointed. One thing I can count on, is oodles of s*pam and I’ve learned to love it so much!

Now, I know, you’re sitting there reading this in a state of disbelief! Horrified. Some of you might even be gaping aghast. I am aware that you are thinking what a pathetic man I am. You’re thinking that I’m so hard-up for entertainment that I’ve taken to watching “House” and reading subject lines from s*pam, just to get my jollies. But, think what you want! As my brain cells continue to rot at an ever-increasing pace, I am sure I will only get worse. And I am horribly aware that I might end up to be a babbling, drooling, old, loony maniac. But, let me tell those of you who think that’s what I am already – I just checked and there is not a drop of drool on my keyboard – and my t-shirt is not on backwards this morning. So, there! Today, at least, I am in perfect, working order.

Fun With s*pam 101

One of the most fun things to do with s*pam is to read the subject lines, and if you have the stomach for it, to read the email itself. Many of your have weak stomachs or are the products of sterile, protected, childhoods, which prohibits you from reading s*pam content. But for those of you who share my wild, youth, and days of playing in a rock and roll band, nothing is too bizarre or weird...

What is a CAPTCHA?

Like Moby Dick, Captcha Ahab. Or Star Trek, Captcha Kirk. Or Mutiny on the Bounty, Captcha Bligh! NO NO NO!

The term CAPTCHA (for Completely Automated Public Turing Test To Tell Computers and Humans Apart) was coined in 2000 by Luis von Ahn, Manuel Blum, Nicholas Hopper and John Langford of Carnegie Mellon University. At the time, they developed the first CAPTCHA to be used by Yahoo.

A CAPTCHA is a used as a challenge to automated entries and robots (bots) to ensure that human is entering the information and the data is not being entered by a computer.

CAPTCHAS are used to prevent unauthorized logins, signups, and also help prevent s*pam. Computers and bots are becoming so sophisticated, some can now defeat single CAPTCHAS. So Web sites are now using double-CAPTCHAS, like the one below:
