A comment from Enid
Hi Darcy & TC. I am writing to tell you about my experience with Emsisoft and the great service they provided me. I was having trouble with some web sites being blocked that had previously been Ok, I had been away for several days and that seemed the only reason i could come up with, anyway my husband was having another problem with his computer and had called in his computer man, so as he was calling in thought I would ask him to fix my problem as well and thus not disturb anybody for what seemed to me would be a simple fix.

Well, to start with the guy is a fan of another Virus protector, of which we are not, he tried this and he tried that and then came up with saying it was the fault of my virus protector and set it so that every time I visited a site a window came up asking me to Ok or Block a site. After a day or so of this I decided to contact Emsisoft themselves to see if they could help and expected to wait several days but no, Emsisoft replied within hours with a solution which I followed, but I had forgotten to save my license key so I downloaded the 30 day trial and contacted Emsisoft again, goodness in no time they were back with a reply saying they couldn't see my details in their list but he would contact Darcy and Cloudeight for my Emsisoft license. I thanked him and sat back to wait, but again the service was incredible, back came my License and also a contact site for me to check in future for my License number as well as my expiry date.

The moral is, if you are having a seemingly Emsisoft problem DO NOT hesitate to contact them, they are fantastic, and ever so helpful, just like their program and the people I bought it through...the service is A1. Thank you to Emsisoft and Cloudeight for your prompt and friendly attention to my problem.

Hi Enid. Thanks so much! Emsisoft is more than a great antivirus and anti-malware, they're a great team of really nice people who care about their products and their customers. Their customer service is world class - and we are confident that should any of our mutual customers have a problem they will get the problem solved quickly. We couldn't be happier to be associated with a company like Emsisoft. Their products and their people are first class.

A comment from Rose
Hi Darcy, Thank you for the quick fix of my windows mail. Windows 8.1 messed it up but you fixed it again. I am so happy to have it back. I am also so happy that I discovered Cloudeight all those years ago. I am really happy that you and TC decided to use your knowledge to help the rest of us by fixing our computers. Best money spent to fix a computer problem is by using your service. I liked watching you do your magic and I know I will need it again if I ever decide to download windows 10.Thanks again Darcy for another job well done. Rose

A comment from Charlene
Anyone having computer problems you need to get your repair ticket and get in touch with Cloudeight online repair service. We are so fortunate to have Darcy & TC having the interest to make computer repair so accessible in our own home! Wow! Just sit back and watch them work! I've used their services before and just completed the Windows 10..pre and post check and everything else in between!! I was leary of downloading on my own but TC was my salvation. I'd be still dealing with Windows 7. Need to keep this old mind learning new things. Thank you, Thank you for having this wonderful service available to us! I so enjoy your newsletters. Keep up the good work!

A comment from Alice
TC worked on my computer this morning. I can't even begin to tell you how happy I am with the results. I would not hesitate to have him or Darcy work on my computer in the future. Their knowledge of computers and how they work is amazing. I'm glad I (we) have somebody to count on when our computers aren't working like their supposed to. Thanks TC!

A comment from Olstan
I am one of those who seem to get problems with my computer fairly often. Thus I have used Darcy and TC regularly.. I cannot speak highly enough about each of them. They have gone out of their way to fix my various problems, often spending well over an hour on my computer. Nothing is too much trouble. On occasions I have had follow up emails (on one occasion I had four on successive days) to enquire whether or not suggestions are working. Where could find two such knowledgeable, dedicated and caring people for computer assistance. Thank you Darcy! Thank you TC!

Thanks to Rose, Charlene, Alice, Olstan and all of you who wrote to us during the past week about the computer services you received from Cloudeight Direct Computer Care. We are so glad we've been able to help so many people from all over the world If you need computer service we hope you'll let us help you! TC & EB

Judie was cruising along with Windows 10 then everything changed
HI TC. You installed Win 10 and all was working well. I just did something and now my desktop is covered with start menu tiles and my desktop icons are gone. I have Googled it but they tell me to go to settings which I can’t find. When I open a tile, I can’t close it or escape. I want the tiles gone and my desktop icons back. Can you tell me what to do please? Judie

Our answer
Hi Judie. You somehow got your computer in Tablet Mode. Just press & hold the Windows Key and press the i key to open Settings. In settings click on "System". In the menu on the left side click on "Tablet Mode" In the Tablet Mode dialog - turn the switch near the top to "Off".

Judie wrote back...

"TC you are a Godsend. Thank you, thank you so much. I just said a little prayer for you. Judie"

Anita doesn't want Microsoft sending her new lock screen images - and doesn't like having to sign into Windows 10
Good morning. I have Window10 that looks like Windows7. Most everything is OK, BUT I'm trying to get rid of the screensavers that they send me almost every time I get on the computer AND I've followed their directions for bypassing the password upon starting up, but to no avail. Can you please help me? These are a real nuisance for me!

Our answer
Hi Anita. I'm not sure what you mean about "the screen savers they send" - not sure who you mean by "They". I am assuming you mean Microsoft - but those are not screen savers they're Lockscreen backgrounds.

If you don't want them to change, go to Settings ---> Personalization ---> Lock Screen and turn off Spotlight. Choose "Picture" instead of Spotlight - then choose the picture you want from the 4 or 5 pictures displayed there. Once you have selected a picture, your lock screen image will not change.

As far as the tips you see around for disabling using a password to log in to Windows 10...Using NETPLWIZ and unchecking "Users must enter password" does not work in the current versions of Windows 10 and it has never worked in you are logging with a Microsoft account. Until Microsoft makes a change, you'll have to enter a password, a picture password, or a 4-digit PIN. I recommend a 4-digit pin. It's quick and easy. To learn how to set up a 4-digit PIN in Windows 10 take a look at this Cloudeight article.

Scott wants to know how to prevent the dreaded "Not responding" messages
I receive intermittent application "Not Responding" messages from Windows 7 while working on my computer. The particular application I'm in doesn't seem to matter. Does anyone know why this occurs, whether a fix exists, or how best to troubleshoot and identify the source?

Our answer
Program "not responding" messages like you're getting are not tied to a particular program. We're guessing you have minimal resources available or a high CPU load.

There are several things you can do. First, you need to find out how much installed RAM you have. You can do this by pressing and holding down the Windows Key then pressing the Pause/ Break key or clicking Start and right-clicking on "Computer "and click on "Properties". If you have less then 4GB of RAM you should install more RAM or limit the amount of multi-tasking you do.

Regardless of the amount of RAM you have installed, if you have dozens of programs starting with Windows, you will less available RAM when Windows boots. Programs that start with Windows, run in the background and use up resources unnecessarily. In Windows 7, hold down the Windows key and press the R key and type MSCONFIG in the Run box and press Enter. Click on the Startup tab. If you see more than 6 or 7 programs starting with Windows, you need to go though that list and disable as many startups as you can. You need your security (antivirus) to start with Windows, and your Printer software, but you don't need iTunes, Real Player, Corel, or any of the dozens of other programs that like to set themselves up (without your permission) to startup with Windows. Disable as many startups as you can. If you find something isn't working right after you disable something, you can go back to MSCONFIG and enable it. When it comes to Windows Startups - less is more. (For those using Windows 8x or Windows 10, you can check your startups by pressing CTRL+SHIFT+ESCAPE to open Task Manager and clicking on the "Startup" tab.

Also, check your CPU usage. Press CTRL + SHIFT + ESC to open Task Manager. Click on the Performance tab. If your CPU usage is more than 15 - 20% you need to find what is using an extraordinary amount of your CPU. Click on the Processes tab and make sure you tick "Show processes from all users" at the bottom. Click on the CPU heading until the processes are showing in order from most CPU to least CPU used. If you find a process that is using up a lot of CPU, right-click on it. get as much information as you can about it and do a search for that particular process such as "SVC HOST USING TOO MUCH CPU". Once you have the information, see if you can find out why it's using so much CPU and if what the suggestions are as to how to fix it. Be careful. there's a lot of misinformation out there - try to stick with sites you can trust. Be careful not to use any tips or tricks which involve editing the registry - unless you really know what you're doing.

Program "not responding" is almost always related to a low resources situation. But sometimes it can be caused by other things too, such as hard drive errors, software conflicts and other things. But low system resources and/or high CPU usage are definitely the two biggest culprits.

We see a lot of these types of "not responding" issues with our Cloudeight Direct services. In most cases we can get rid of those annoying messages and speed up your computer considerably. Please see this page for more details about our Cloudeight Direct Computer Care services.

Andi likes Windows 10 but not like Microsoft Edge; Edge tries to open her PDF documents
I actually do like Win 10 and am enjoying discovering new features through your helpful newsletters. I'm wondering why, sometimes (not always) when I open a PDF it opens in Edge ( which, by the way, I DO NOT like) instead of my PDF program, which is Adobe. Edge seems to open slowly and then takes longer to find my printer, etc.. Where is this setting?

Our Answer
Hi Andi. Thanks so much. No comment on Edge :-). While there are other ways to set default programs, here's what we think would work best for you. Right-click on the Windows 10 start button, choose "Control Panel". Make sure you are in Icon view and not Category view (you can switch back and forth by using the down arrow next to "View by" near the top right corner"). Click on "Set your default Programs" and a list of programs installed on your computer will appear. They'll be in alphabetical order, so near the top of the list you should see Adobe. Click on Adobe. then click "Set this program as default". You should then see "This program has all its defaults". That's all there is to it.

Wendy wants a shortcut on her desktop to her Firefox Bookmarks
It would be helpful to open Bookmarks from a desktop shortcut, without first opening Firefox, but I cannot figure out how to create this shortcut.

Our Answer
Hi Wendy. You can't directly open Firefox bookmarks. But here's a suggestion that will work perfectly. Import your Firefox "Bookmarks" into Internet Explorer, then create a shortcut on your desktop to you Favorite folder. Your Favorites folder contains all your Internet Explorer Favorites as well as any bookmarks you imported into Internet Explorer Favorites. You can't get rid of Internet Explorer anyway, so you might as well use it for something :-)

The location of your Favorites folder is C:\Users\YOUR USER NAME\Favorites

You cannot access your Firefox Bookmarks unless Firefox is open, But in case you want to verify this... press the Windows Key + R key and type:

%APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\

In the Run box. You'll see a "Bookmarks backup" folder - but you won't be able to open those database files.

Now back to the shortcut to Favorites. Your Favorites folder will display imported bookmarks as HTML files which you can open with any browser. In the picture below, I imported all my Chrome (my default browser) bookmarks  into Internet Explorer. I created a shortcut to C:\Users\MyUserName\Favorites and then opened it. All of my Chrome bookmarks are there. (And I do have Firefox installed and a few bookmarks in Firefox, and those I imported into Internet Explorer's Favorites, and show up here too.)

Cloudeight InfoAve

Above: Chrome and Firefox books (as well as IE Favorites) are showing up in alphabetical order. This is a great way to keep bookmarks ready and easy to access via a desktop shortcut.

There's another way too. You can export your Firefox bookmarks to an HTML file and save the file on your desktop. This works for Chrome as well. To export your Firefox bookmarks, click Tools/Bookmarks/Show all Bookmarks. Click the "import and backup" tab. Click on "Export bookmarks to HTML" and save that file on your desktop. Clicking on the file will open an HTML document (web page) with a list of all your bookmarks as clickable links.

If you're a Chrome user, see this page about saving your bookmarks to an HTML file.

Lonnie wants to know more about Cloudeight Direct Computer Care Season Tickets
I am interested in one of your season tickets, however I have a question. I am not having any problems with my computer at this time. However if I buy a season ticket today is it good for one year from today? How many times can I use it in one year? Your $99 price is unbelievable. I just paid over $200 to have my wife's computer repaired.

Also, I'm a new subscriber to Cloudeight and I'm very happy to be. You make computers fun and everything is in simple English so I don't have to be a computer nerd to understand your computer tips. Thanks!

Our Answer
Hi Lonnie. Welcome aboard and thanks so much for your nice comments. The Cloudeight Direct Season Ticket is an annual Cloudeight Direct Computer Care service plan that is good for 365 days from the day you first use it. For example, let's say bought a season ticket today, but didn't use it until, let's say, July 10, 2016. Your Season Ticket would be good until July 10, 2017. Kinda crazy but a good deal for our friends and subscribers. There is no limit as to the number of times you can use your Season Ticket.

You can get Cloudeight Direct Season Tickets for just $99 (or $169 for two computers) for a limited time from this page. And remember, the clock does not start ticking on your Season Ticket until the first time you use it. It's good for 365 days from its first use, so it really is like having insurance for your computer.

Create Desktop Reminders - No additional software required!
Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1 and Windows 10

You've had the power to create reminders right on your desktop all along - and most of you didn't realize it. But now we're going to show you how easy it is to leave little reminder notes to yourself without using sticky notes or any other program.

All you have to do to create desktop reminders is right-click on any empty area of your desktop and choose "New" and select "Folder", or "Text document" or "Rich text document" and give it a name that is the reminder. Like "Buy Milk", Vet @ 2pm Tuesday", "TC's Birthday", etc. It's not very feature-full but it works, it's easy to do, and it doesn't require any software at all.

See?

When you're done with them you can rename them to something else of which you wish to be reminded or just right-click and delete them.

The Function Keys are Functional
All Windows users

They're called Function Keys -- most of us call them the "F" keys. They're usually at the top of your keyboard, and for the most part they go un-used. But they can be very useful. Here are some functions you might find useful that can be done with a tap on an "F" key.

F1 FOR HELP
The F1 key when using a program will open its help file.

F2 TO RENAME
Select and highlight a file or folder and press F2 key to quickly rename that file or folder. You can also use the F2 keyboard shortcut to rename multiple files in batch mode. Just select multiple files using your mouse and press F2 to rename the selected files.

F3 TO SEARCH
F3 will launch a search bar when using a web browser like Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, Firefox, etc.

F4 TO SELECT ADDRESS BAR IN EXPLORER
Pressing the F4 key toggles and highlights the address bar of Windows Explorer (File Explorer).

F5 IS REFRESHING
Quickly refresh to view updated contents of a folder or items on the Windows desktop by pressing F5 key. F5 will also refresh a Web page while using your favorite Web browser.

F11 TO GO FULL SCREEN
To view more of a Web page without the clutter of menu bars, tool bars, etc., press the F11 while visiting a Web site. To go back to your normal browser window, just press the F11 key again.

Ye Olde Hidden Send-to Menu in Windows 7, Windows 8x and Windows 10
Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10

When you right click on an file or folder in Windows Explorer the default Send To menu contains only a few locations. But there is a hidden Send-to menu in Windows 7, Windows 8x and Windows 10 - and all you have to do to access it is hold down the Shift key while right-clicking a file or folder.

Holding down the Shift key while right-clicking expands the Send-to menu with at least ten additional entries like My Documents folders, Downloads or Contacts. Try it. You might like it! If you do, do it and do it often and you'll remember it.

A Windows 10 Menu You Probably Never Knew You Had

Windows 10

No matter how much we think we know about Windows, we’re always finding something new. Well, maybe not new, just different. The Accessories menu is on Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10. Back in the days of XP, Vista, and even in Windows 7, Accessories was listed under “A” alphabetically, but in Windows 10, it’s listed under Windows Accessories and therefore it’s listed under the “W” section of the Start menu. So while it used to be near the top and easy to find, now it’s near the bottom of the start menu and you might not have noticed it. So now, in Windows 10,  to get to Windows Accessories, you have to click the Windows 10 Start button, click “All apps” and then scroll down to the Ws and find Windows Accessories.

Well, here, take a look:

Hidden in the Windows Accessories menu is a bunch of useful stuff. Sorry for that technical language :) . When you click the down-arrow next to Windows Accessories (see above) you’ll see a menu open (see below):

As you can see (above) a lot of useful Windows programs are hiding in the Window Accessories menu – things like Character Map (which helps you make stuff like æ Ø ß ¿ – characters not available on your keyboard – well at least not on mine. You’ll also find WordPad, Notepad, Sticky Notes, Snipping Tool, Internet Explorer and more.

And if anything in the Accessories menu is something you’ll use often, you can make a shortcut on the Start menu or Taskbar. All you have to do is right-click the item you want to put on your Start menu or Taskbar and choose “Pin to Start” or “More” and then “Pin to taskbar” (see below):

And now you know how much great stuff is hidden in the almost hidden Windows Accessories menu in Windows 10.

Thanks to EB for the idea for this tip.

Trim Some Fat From Windows 10
Windows 10

Cloudeight InfoAveIf any of you, like me, have had problems with your weight at any time during your life, then you know what I mean when I say you feel "sluggish and slow". Even tying shoes or bending over can be an effort (NO! I was never that "rotund", EB.) If you were once drastically overweight and you lost 50 - 60 - 70 or more pounds, congratulations. I bet you felt leaner and had more vigor. If you've ever been on a diet and lost a lot of weight you know how tough it can be. For those looking for some secret diet tricks, maybe later. Today we are going to put Windows 10 on a diet. We're going to make it leaner, meaner, and cleaner. And unlike us folks who've had to diet off 40 or 50 or more pounds and had to struggle to stay on our diets, Windows won't suffer and it won't take months to remove some blubber from it..

OK, now that we've completely lost you, let's get back on track..

Click your Start Button ---> Settings (or press Windows Key + i to bring up Settings).  In Settings, click on Privacy. In the Privacy dialog click on "Background apps""

In the Background apps dialog you'll find 20 or more background apps. You'll also find that most or all of them are turned on for no good reason. For instance, if you don't use the alarm clock, timers or stop watch features of Windows 10 - turn off Alarms & clock (even if you turn them off you can still use them). Don't worry your clock will not disappear from your taskbar. Turning off Calendar, won't take away your calendar when you click on your clock in your taskbar. Anything you leave turned on will put a little bit of a drag (not much) on your computer and make it a bit less efficient and (I think) slower. Both EB and I had some abnormally high CPU and RAM usage going on - until we shut off most of these background apps. And you can't go wrong. If you shut off something you need, you can turn it on as fast as you turned it off.

The more background apps you turn off the less resources will be used. You might see an increase in available RAM and a decrease in CPU usage --and those are good things - especially if you want your computer to run like a rabbit instead of a tortoise carrying a someone as big and heavy as EB on its back.

Try turning off as many background apps as you can and see if that helps perk up your Windows 10 computer a little bit.

Windows Event Viewer
Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows 10

A lot of people are just now discovering Windows Event viewer because Windows 10 has Event Viewer listed on its right-click menu (when you right-click the start button – or hold down the Windows Key and press the X key). And apparently easy access to Event Viewer is causing a lot of concern with a lot of people and it’s mostly unnecessary concern.

First, Windows Event Viewer has been around for over a decade. It’s nothing new. However, Windows 10 makes it a lot easier to find and a lot of people are finding it.

Not to lessen Event Viewer’s importance, but there are always going to be errors and warnings when you look in Event Viewer and most of them are not serious and most do not mean something is wrong with your computer. It would be extremely rare to open Event Viewer and not see any warnings and/or errors., and you can’t solve all of them.

My computer is well-maintained and it good working order, but a quick glance at my Event Viewer would lead you to believe that my computer is on the brink of being thrown on the junk heap.

Cloudeight InfoAve

Yikes! Looks bad doesn’t it? Oh my...look at this!

Is my computer really ready for the junk pile? No. It’s a very well maintained, smooth running, fast computer. I couldn’t do my job if it weren’t. But someone who doesn’t understand the Windows Event Viewer looking at my computer’s Event Viewer logs would conclude my computer is in horrible condition.

You can get details about each error (in red) and each warning (in yellow) by clicking on the error or warning. But what you see many not be of much help to you unless you know what you’re looking at – or you’re a great googler .

I clicked on a critical error (the one in the image above showing a white X in a red circle) and got this general description. It says it’s a critical error. So I’d better click on the “Details” tab to find out more.

Cloudeight Internet

CLOUDEIGHT INFOAVE

So I googled the error and found that I should check my Device Manager to make sure there are no errors with my hardware devices. I checked and all is well. It turns out this error was temporary and not “critical” at all.

So why is there an Event Manager? Event Manager can be used to troubleshoot problems with your computer. But just seeing a bunch of error messages and warnings does not mean there’s anything wrong with your computer. Confused yet?

Unless you know what you’re doing or you’re willing to spend the time to google all the error codes and understand whatever turns up in your search, Event Viewer can be more disturbing than helpful.

Even Viewer is best used if you’re troubleshooting a specific problem on your computer and you’re willing to take the time to search error codes and details to learn which each error is. But just opening up Event Viewer and seeing a lot of errors and warnings does not mean there’s something seriously wrong with your computer. Most of those errors and warnings are fleeting issues that don’t need fixing. I’ve seen thousands of computers during my time with Cloudeight Direct and I’ve never seen a computer where Event Viewer didn’t list a litany of warnings and errors.

Scammers use the Event Viewer to scare potential victims. And it works. If you are not familiar with Windows Event Viewer, it would be easy for a scammer to show you things in Event Viewer like the screen shots (above) from my computer and scare you into buying a "repair" that you don't need. Scammers know that this scares people and they bilk innocent victims out of millions of dollars using Event Viewer. Victims pay the scammers hundreds of dollars, and the scammer fixes all those errors and warnings. How? He simply clears the Event Viewer logs - no errors, no  warnings, no anything.  Don't fall for the Event Viewer scam.

So, if you decide to look at your Event Viewer, don’t panic when you see a lot of error and warnings. If you’re troubleshooting a particular problem and you are willing to research every detail shown, then Event Viewer can be another tool you can use to find out what is causing a problem with your computer. But there’s no reason to conclude that something is terribly wrong with your computer just because your Event Viewer shows critical errors and warnings.

A Stroller On a Spring Day

Today was one of the first really nice days of spring. It was the kind of spring day I think about when the wicked winds of winters rattle the windows and pound on my spirit. The sky was cerulean blue and served up with a generous serving of fluffy white clouds.

I had just finished mowing the lawn. I went inside the house, went to the front window, pulled back the drapes, and looked out at the freshly mowed lawn. I thought what a great job of mowing I did…all the lines are straight! The thought that I’m getting too old for this kind of stuff...yard work... also crossed my mind.

I’ve always hated cutting grass – it seems like such a waste of time. It’s second only to shoveling snow on my list of things I really don't like to do. The dentist and urologist are that same list.

Anyway, while I was admiring my mowing skills, I happened to see a young man walking down the sidewalk pushing a very young child in a stroller. And suddenly the freshly mowed lawn and the beautiful spring day were woven together into a tapestry of memories – and a few tears too.

The young man was probably in his mid-20’s. The child was probably not even a year old…a baby, really. The young man didn’t look particularly happy, but he didn’t look annoyed either. I wondered if he were ordered by his wife, the mom, to take the child for a ride in the stroller so mom could take a nap, make a cake, cook dinner, or whatever else is it young moms like to do.

I wondered, perhaps, if the young man had the day off and decided to spend some time with his child. The day was perfect for a stroller ride, comfortably cool but not cold, a bright sun shining down on them made the day seem warmer than it probably was – a light jacket for the man and a light blanket for the child were all that was needed on a perfect spring day like this one.

And with bittersweet memories I saw myself long ago pushing a child in stroller. I remember spring days just like this one – days that beg you to come on outside – pushing a child in a stroller and not giving it any more thought than I would getting in the car and going to the store to pick up a six-pack of beer. It was just one of those things people do – nothing special.

But those days when I pushed the stroller were indeed special...

The Windows Tweaker
A Tweaker for Timid Tweakers

Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows 10

We've featured Windows tweakers before - some of them had some pretty advanced features and playing around with them brought bad things down upon the heads of users. So, we stopped recommending Windows tweakers because they make it too easy to timid and torpid tweakers to tweak themselves into terrible trouble.

Well, we are rarely brave enough to recommend a tweake, because many people seem to get themselves in some serious problems with them. That being said, this tweaker is perfect for even the most timid tweaker; this tweaker makes it difficult for you to tweak yourself into tweaking trouble. So if you're a truly timid tweaker but have things you wish you could change on your Windows computer, you've come to the right place - our newsletter of course.

Rather than dissecting this program and exposing its inner workings to you, we're going to simply tell you that its pretty interface makes it pretty easy to use, easy enough that even those of you how are terribly timid tweakers will be able to tweak your computer without fear of timidly teaking yourself into some really bad problems. So rather than blathering on and on and on and on about this program, we're going to show you some screen shots, with minimal descriptions. If you can figure out what this program does without needing us to explain the screen shots, then you're the kind of timid tweaker who would love to give this tweaker a twirl.

The above screen shots give you just a small glimpse of the many beneficial and/or fun changes you can make to your Windows computer with this tweaker. This program is beautifully designed and so simple even EB could figure it out the first time she opened it. As you know she's getting up in the years now and isn't as spry as she once was - her mental capacity has dimmed. So if EB can do it, you can do it, and we all can do it.

The name of this freeware program is "The Windows Tweaker", not to be confused with the other 400 or so programs with the same or similar names. The Windows Tweaker is truly the tweaker for timid tweakers. And it works on Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 and works on both 32-bit and 64-bit systems.

For those interested, you can learn more about and download THE Windows Tweaker from here. Please note, this program comes as both a portable version and as in installer - we tested the portable version and that's the version you should download. Just be sure to create a shortcut to it so you an use it more than once. To create a shortcut, right-click on the exe file you downloaded and choose "Pin to Start", "Pin to Taskbar" and/or Send to: Desktop (create shortcut).

And now you know your ABC's! Advanced Basic Computering. I know it makes no sense, EB, but a lot of things I write and say make no sense!

What is portable software?

Imagine a gym bag or carry on suitcase with a handle loaded with software. Imagine lugging it with me everywhere you go. That's what portable software is. You can lug it around with you. NO! That's not what it is. No lugging needed. Portable software does not have to be installed, so you can take it with you and run a programs or programs from a USB flash drive. No can do with installed software...portable software only, please.

Most of the software most of you use is installed software. That's the kind you install and it adds a shortcut to your desktop and maybe to your start menu and task bar - and that adds things, sometimes quite a lot of things, to your registry. And somehow many of you have the opinion that portable versions are ersatz versions of the real software, but that's not true - in fact there are many good reasons to opt for the portable version over the installed version whenever you have such a choice.

Now you want to know why? Good, we are going to tell you why. The first thing we'll point out is that if something doesn't install, it doesn't bundle things in its installer. And anytime you can feel pretty confident about putting a program on your computer without having to sit like an armed sentry waiting to see what crazy software the installer is going to try to sneak unto your computer without your knowledge If you don't pay attention to these kinds of bundled installers, you're going to have a mess - a big mess - that's not going to be easy to get rid of. You'd think it would be illegal to ruin someone's computer, but there's no law we know of against software bundling because in the tiny print of the 5000-word EULA there's probably legalese saying that if you install this software you are agreeing to everything and you can't come back at the software manufacturer even if your computer ceases to function.

And the second reason you should choose portable over installed software is that portable software makes no changes to your registry, adds no shortcuts to your start menu, taskbar or desktop. And best of all, in order to uninstalled portable software, all you have to do is right-click on it and choose "Delete" and it's gone, gone, gone I tells ya!

And the final reason why portable software is better than installed software is, it never helps itself to a place in your Windows startup programs list, like so many installed software programs do.

For those reasons and more we probably haven't even thought of, we always choose portable versions over installed versions when we have a choice. There are exceptions of course, but for most applications a portable version offers all of the features and none of the drawbacks.

A portable version runs when you click it (or its shortcut if you made one), and it's uninstalled when you right-click it and delete it. It doesn't make any changes to your computer and you can even put it on a flash drive and take it with you.

So, then next time you have a choice between a portable version and an version that comes with an installer, choose the portable version. We think you'll be happier and your computer will be happier too.

There are even sites devoted to dispensing portable software. One of them, for example, is www.portableapps.com .

No EB! It's not POTABLE software, you can't drink it. It's PORTABLE. Go find some potable water and pour it on your head!
