Our new Cloudeight Direct Thunderbird Email Set-up Service

Microsoft has announced that as of January 2017, they are no longer updating or supporting Windows Live. Microsoft addresses no longer work in Windows Live, and many ISP that use new secure servers, or have plans to, will soon stop working with Windows Live Mail.  And Windows Mail on Windows 10 is a problem because every time Windows 10 has a major update, Windows Mail has to be reset. Plus, the Mail App included with Windows 10 is very basic and few people find it useful

Mozilla Thunderbird is a great alternative for those of you who have been using Windows Live Mail or Windows Mail on Windows 10 and who don't want to use the limited Windows 10 Mail App. Thunderbird is compatible with all email accounts, including all Microsoft accounts, Windows 10 updates don't affect it, and has the familiar look of Windows Mail and Windows Live Mail. However it's very different as far as setting it up and configuring it.

So we're offering Cloudeight Thunderbird Email set-up service.

Our new Thunderbird Email set-up service includes installing and setting up Thunderbird to look and work as much like Windows Live Mail / Windows Mail as possible. We'll configure up to 3 email accounts for you and set them up as IMAP so that all your mail messages and folders on your mail server(s) are included in your Thunderbird Email program too! Plus, we'll give you a list of tips & tricks to help you get the most out of Thunderbird Email program.

Our new Thunderbird Email Set-up Service begins on October 1, 2016. We are now scheduling Thunderbird Set-up sessions. Get email that works the way you want it to -- get your Cloudeight Direct Thunderbird Email Set-up Service key right now and put an end to the Windows 10 email merry-go-round.

GET MORE INFO AND SIGN UP FOR OUR THUNDERBIRD EMAIL SETUP SERVICE RIGHT NOW!

A comment from Judy G.
After having Darcy reset my Windows Mail three or four times because of Microsoft updates/changes to my laptop, I finally decided to have Cloudeight set me up with Thunderbird email. Looking forward to the change, AND I think I will still be able to use email stationery yippee! Forgive me, I am a silly old lady, but I enjoy the stationery. Thank you again Darcy, you really are an angel. I enjoy reading all the tips, etc. in Cloudeight Daily and weekly newsletters. Judy G.

Thanks very much, Judy. We are very happy with the Thunderbird set up, it's much nicer than having to go through all the resets or the uncertainly Windows Live Mail users will be facing in the coming month as Microsoft discontinues its support for it beginning January 2017. As far as stationery goes, we have a surprise coming for everyone very soon :-). Thanks so much for your nice comments! TC & EB

A comment from Maggie
I had a session with Darcy this past week to my Windows 10 straightened out. i cannot think of enough words to say to thank you!!You know how to get to the "heart" of the pc and do magic!! Your computer repair service is a really GREAT deal. Thank you again so much, Darcy! You're a wizard!

A comment from Danielle
Thanks to TC for working on my daughter's laptop to get it cleaned up and working again. This laptop has been has always had problems and I think it's because of some of the sites my daughter uses. I'm going to buy more Direct Computer Care keys an keep them handy ... I just know I'll be using them. What a great service you provide. Thanks again.

A comment from Judy
I am one happy camper. Darcy applied her magic to my new computer. It was acting like an old geezer:-) instead of a new pc. She told me what she thought was wrong and gave some valuable advice. You can't go wrong with those two(T.C and Darcy). Before considering anyone else, give them a try and you too will be a happy camper. Judy W,

A comment from Phyllis
I can’t say enough about how hard T.C. worked to fix the problem in my computer. He was so patient with me when I wanted to jump in & type a response ( no typing when he is trying to work!). Again THANK YOU for solving my problem, please do not hesitate to ask them for help, they are great!

A comment from Kathleen
Can not ask for a better way to start the week. Darcy ...You are amazing!! Fun to watch you scooting around and doing what you do. It was a pleasure to have you and above all...Thank You for cleaning up my messes!

Thanks to Maggie, Danielle, Judy, Phyllis, Kathleen and all of you who wrote to us during the past week about the computer services you received from

Darlene wants to know if this software can fix her computer
Hi, guys. An advertisement for SpeedFix tool popped up on my Facebook page the past couple of days. Have you checked it out? My FB is running incredibly slow, and I was wondering if this would be safe to try. Looks like a come-on ad, but will see what you think about it.  Darlene

Our answer
Hi Darlene. There are quick ways to tell this as a scam. Here's what the page says:
"..Is your computer running slow? Don’t buy a new PC or call a computer repair company. This “3-click fix” is saving people thousands of dollars in computer costs. Your computer is designed to fail. Some people are upset when they learn this. But the reality is that PC makers and software companies need a reason to keep people buying upgrades every year. They’re in the business of making money..."
It's no secret that businesses are in business to make money, but they're not going to be in business very long if they make inferior quality products that break down quickly. There is plenty of competition to keep manufacturers from doing this.

Microsoft's reputation is sullied enough without them intentionally trying to make software that breaks. No computer manufacturer is going to build computers that break down on purpose. It makes no sense. There are dozens of computer manufacturers and they're competing with each other. It would be corporate suicide for a computer company to make computers that break down after a short time.

No software company is going to make junky software just so you have to buy an update.

Look at the facts: Millions of people are using computer with Windows 7 on them and Windows 7 is over 7-years old. Some Windows 7 computers are over 7-years-old too. Most of us are using computers at least several years old.

Three is no 3-click-fix, just as there is no quick way to lose weight without exercise or going on a diet. The company the article refers to is SpeedFix Tool, which we dissected quite a while ago (you can read that article here).

No matter how much we want a pill that can add years to our lives, or milkshakes that take inches off our waists, or books that can make us all geniuses, it's not going to happen. And there will never be a 3-click-fix that can make your computer run like new, no matter how much we all wish it were true.

Companies like this prey on people's good nature and willingness to believe - and these kinds of shysters have bilked people for millions, perhaps even billions of dollars.

If your computer's running slow, it may be something simple like too many start up programs, our something complicated like services using up too much of your computer's processor or many other things. No magic elixirs exist, but snake oil salesmen count on us believing they do.

Regina wants to know about Windows Live Mail
I have recently been one of those who lost access to my Hotmail account in Windows Live Mail. I have several other accounts that I have set up in Windows Live Mail. I read your newsletters and understand that Microsoft accounts won't work in Windows Live Mail, but what about my other accounts?

Our answer
Hi Regina. Windows Live Mail is part of Windows Essentials. Here's the official scoop from Microsoft:

Will Windows Essentials 2012 still be available for download?
Windows Essentials 2012 suite will be available for download until it reaches its end of support date on January 10, 2017.

What happens to my already installed Windows Essentials 2012 applications?
Already installed applications will continue to work as they do today. There is an increased security risk associated with use of unsupported products past their end of support date.

Can I still use Windows Live Mail?
Yes. Though, some email service providers have moved to newer email protocols for improved security and reliability not supported by Windows Live Mail. These email service providers may no longer work.

Microsoft will end support for all products included in the Windows (Live) Essentials package and this includes Windows Live Mail. If your ISP or email service providers uses the newer, more secure email protocols, those accounts will no long work in Windows Live Mail.

Microsoft is trying to push Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 users into using the Windows Mail App. As we've said a number of times, while the Mail App may be appropriate for smart phones and tablets, it's sadly lacking the features most of us need in an email program for use on PCs.

Thunderbird is a good alternative to Windows Live Mail (as well as Windows Mail) because it looks similar and its feature set is similar. Thunderbird works with all mail protocols including the new more secure ones. We can set up Thunderbird for you and make transition from Windows Live Mail very easy for you. If you're interested, please visit this page.

Paul wants to know what product key he can use if he needs to reinstall Windows 10?
I read on a tips site that if something goes wrong with Windows and Windows 10 Reset won't work, you will need to buy Windows 10 for $100 in order to install it again. That doesn't seem fair, does it? Is it true?

Our answer
Hi Paul. As usual, the sensationalistic bloggers are at it again. We've read the stuff about if you upgrade to Windows 10 and down the road you need to reinstall it, you'll have to pay to get a product key. Like most sensationalistic blogger drivel it's not true.

If you upgraded from Windows 7 or Windows 8x to Windows 10 then you can use your installation media (DVD in your case) to reinstall Windows. According to Microsoft if you reinstall Windows 10 using your DVD, and it's the same version as you installed when you upgraded (i.e. Windows 7 Home Premium-->Windows 10 Home or Windows 7 Pro -->Windows 10 Pro) you won't need an installation key - Windows will be automatically activated. Here's what Microsoft has to say:
"Reinstalling Windows 10 after upgrade

We understand that you may have some questions regarding what to do if you have to reinstall Windows 10 at some point after you take advantage of the free upgrade. Here are some basic questions and answers regarding the free upgrade offer:

Q: After doing a free upgrade to Windows 10, how do I clean install Windows 10 subsequently?

A: Once your device upgrades to Windows 10 using the free upgrade offer and activates online automatically, you will be able to clean install (i.e. boot from media and install Windows 10) the same edition of Windows 10 that you upgraded to on the same device during and after the free upgrade offer. You will not be required to purchase Windows 10 or go back to your prior down-level version of Windows...

To enable clean installation of Windows 10 on devices that upgraded and activated online using the free upgrade offer:

You will be able to download and create installation media on a USB drive or DVD for the appropriate Windows 10 Edition

You will be able to skip entering the product key during Windows 10 Setup. Windows 10 will activate online automatically on such devices. The skip option is only available when booting from media and launching setup

The automatic online activation will occur seamlessly after clean installing Windows 10 if the device had previously upgraded and activated online the same Edition of Windows 10. No product keys are required."
The important point here is "No product keys are required". And this is also a good time to remind everyone that creating a Windows 10 installation DVD or USB flash drive is something everyone should do. You can use the installation media to boot your PC if you're having trouble booting into Windows. You can use the Windows 10 installation media to boot your computer and access troubleshooting options, system restore, system reset, and more. And of course, if necessary, you could reinstall Windows 10 --- no product keys required.

Here's our step-by-step tutorial on creating Windows 10 installation media.

Shirley has a question about the recent hacking of a half billion Yahoo accounts
Many Yahoo users e-mail accounts have been hacked. How does that affect those of us who have friends who are on Yahoo and we have sent e-mails back and forth?

Our answer
Hi Shirley, merely exchanging emails with a Yahoo account user does not put you at risk if you're not using a Yahoo account. So you can relax.

Linda wants to know how to find her print queue
How can I find the print queue to delete jobs that I don't want to print. I would appreciate any feedback you have about the print queue. Thanks.

Our answer
Hi Linda. You should have a print queue icon (it looks like a little printer)in your notification area / system tray (the area next to the time/date in the lower right hand corner of your screen). If you don't see it, click the up arrow on the left edge of the notification area / system try to expand it so you can see all the icons.

If you still don't see it there, open control panel, go to devices and printers, and find the printer in the list. Now right click on the icon and choose "see what's printing". These are instructions are for Windows 10, so the wording may vary a bit if you are using Windows 7 or 8.

Test Your Internet Speed Right From Your Browser's Address Bar
Firefox and Chrome Browsers
Windows 7, 8.1, and 10

How fast is your internet connection? Are you getting the speed you're paying your service provider for? Are you just curious?

It used to be you had to go to one of those Web sites that offered to check your speed for you. And, most of them were pretty heavily laden with advertisements. But you don't have to put up with that anymore, we tells ya!

Open your Chrome or Firefox browser and type "speed test" (no quotes) in the address bar. You'll be testing your speed in no time.

Cloudeight InfoAve
Click on "RUN SPEED TEST" (duh!) and in you'll see the speed test dialog appear.

Cloudeight InfoAve
Watch your speed increase as the test is running. Will it reach 100+? I doubt it, but good for you if it does - because you're flying high!

If your paying for 20 MBPS (megabits per second) but you are getting less than that, time to call your ISP and ask them why. Tell them that EB sent you; that should scare them! Well, Halloween is coming you know. I'm going to dress up as EB!

Oh yeah, if you're using Internet Explorer or Edge, you can type Speed Test in your address bar too, but it takes you to Bing Search and a speed test. Much faster on Chrome and / or Firefox.

Save Any Web Page As a PDF File
Windows 7, Windows 8x and Windows 10

PDF files are great because they save the integrity of the document you’re copying (or printing). We did this tutorial using Chrome, but if you’re using Windows 10 you can do it with any browser as we’ll explain at the end of this post. If you’re using Chrome you can do this on Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1 and Windows 10.

We chose one of our articles for this tip. You know what they say — if you don’t toot your own horn nobody’s going to toot it for you.

On the page we want to save as PDF, we right-click and choose “Print” (see below):

Cloudeight infoAve

Under Destination, click “Change”:

Cloudeight infoAve

Under “Select a destination” choose “Save as PDF” (don’t forget to switch this back to your printer next time you want to print something or else you’ll end up with another PDF).

Cloudeight infoAve

Now that you have “Save as PDF” selected as the destination, click the “Save” button. File Explorer (Windows Explorer) will open and you can browse to wherever you want to save the PDF file.

Cloudeight infoAve

We chose the root of Drive G  and saved it as is, with the title of the article as its title. But you can save Web pages with any name you want and save them to any folder or drive you want.

.Cloudeight infoAve

When we open the PDF file we just saved, we find it to be just like the Web page.

Cloudeight InfoAve

Including the images:

CLOUDEIGHT INTERNET

And that’s all there is to it. You can save any Web page as a PDF file.

If you’re not using Chrome but you are using Windows 10:

  1. Using any browser you want, go to the page you want to save as a PDF file.
  2. Press Ctrl+P
  3. You should see a drop-down menu with at least your printer and Microsoft Print to PDF.

    CLOUDEIGHT INTERNET

  4. Choose Microsoft Print to PDF from the list
  5. Save your PDF file wherever you want

If you don’t have Windows 10, and you’re not using Chrome, and you do have a PDF program like “Foxit Reader” (free version is fine), you’ll have the option to save the file as PDF using it (providing your 3rd-party PDF tool supports it).

Why would you want to do this? If you like saving recipes, household tips, computer tips and tricks, how-to articles, etc. , PDF files are great because they preserve the page contents. (Note: If the page has a background image, the image won’t be preserved in your PDF file. But usually that’s no big deal.

How to Sign Out of Windows 10
Windows 10

We’ve had several people ask how to sign out of Windows 10. It’s very easy to do, but if you don’t know where to look it can be frustrating.

Before we get to the gist of signing out of Windows 10, we’ll tell you why signing out can actually save you time. Instead of shutting down at the end of the day, you can sign out of your account. It will make for much quicker start to your day when all you have to do it log in instead of starting up your computer. Also, some software installations tell you to "sign out" or "restart" after installation. If a program installation gives you that choice, you'll save time by signing out rather than restarting your PC.

So now on with the show.

Most of the time, to restart Windows, you’ll click the Start button and click “Restart” (or “Update and Restart” , if you have Windows updates pending). But, as you can see, clicking “Start” “Power options” does not give you the option to sign out. See?

The default options are “Sleep”, “Shut down” (or “Update & shut down” if you have updates pending) or “Update” (or “Update and restart if you have updates pending). There is no “Sign out” on that menu.

Here are 2 ways to get to the “Sign out” option:

  1. Click on your name at the top of the start menu.

You’ll see the options above. Click on “Sign out”.

2. Or, you can right-click on the start button, click on “Shutdown or sign out”:

And then click “Sign out”.

And that's all there is to signing out of Windows 10.

Help Dealing With Ransomware
All Windows Users

First of all we're going to tell you that if you're careful what you click, use good security software like Emsisoft and you take your common sense with you when you're on the computer, you'll never have to worry about ransomware.

Ransomware, unlike what some fear mongers would have you believe is something you're not very likely to encounter. But is a very nasty thing if you are stricken with it.

Ransomware is called ransomware because it locks (encrypts) files on your computer using a unique encryption key. Once your files are locked you cannot access them unless you have the encryption key. Most ransomware locks personal files like pictures, documents, music, etc. In other words files that cannot be replaced easily. The criminals behind the ransomware want you to pay them to give you the key to decrypt your files. The ransom may be as high as several hundred dollars. And these criminals are not dumb - in order to remain anonymous they will have you pay them using bitcoin or some other non-traceable cyber-currency.

The best way to deal with ransomware is to not get it in the first place. But we're all human and sometimes we make mistakes.

So this guide if for you to keep, just in case. But again, we're not trying to scare you, we're trying only to prepare you.

Find out what kind of ransomware you have. knowledge is power. If you know what kind of ransomware you have, you might be able to find the right decrypter or tool to deal with it. Thanks to a kind-hearted coder, you can use this free service to determine what kind of ransomware is infecting your PC. As of this writing, this service can identify over 180 types of Ransomware.

The service is called I.D. Ransomware and it's located here:

https://id-ransomware.malwarehunterteam.com/index.php

Once you know what kind of ransomware you have, you'll be glad to know that Emsisoft has plenty of help for victims of over 20 different kinds of ransomware.

You can get them all (and more as they are added, free from Emsisoft's web site. https://decrypter.emsisoft.com/

If your screen is locked by ransomware, you may be able to access your PC by using one of these free Ransomware Screen Unlocker Tools
from TrendMicro. Be sure you read the instructions on the page. There are 2 different tools. The first one is you're not able to access your PC in normal Windows, but you can access it in Safe Mode. The second tool is provided for those who cannot access their PC at all. You will need to have an uninfected computer or tablet and a USB flash drive handy to download the second tool. Be sure to read and/or print all instructions provided. The tools and instructions are available here:

https://esupport.trendmicro.com/en-us/home/pages/technical-support/1105975.aspx

Finally, don't panic. There's no reason to. Ransomware is nasty stuff - but it's relatively rare. If you use good ol' common sense, reasonable caution and you use a good software security solution like Emsisoft, you'll never have to worry about ransomware.

We are publishing this ransomware tip so you can save it, just in case. Remember it is far better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.

Now you have it. We hope you never need it.

Cloudeight InfoAveFive Ctrl Key Shortcuts Every Computer User Should Know
All Windows Users

After working with thousands of people with our Cloudeight Direct Computer Care service, one thing we've noticed is that not many of you use fundamental, time-saving shortcuts. So today, we're going to show you five shortcuts you really need to know.

OK ready? Let's say you're reading a page on the Web and you're looking for a particular word. Do you:

a.) Scan the page manually for the word?

b.) Use the browser's search feature in the browser toolbar?

c.) Press Cntrl+F to open the page search dialog?

d.) None of the above.

No, EB, the answer is C. If you're looking for a word on a page in your web browser, word processer, text editor, PDF viewer, and many others, just press Ctrl+F to open the "Find" dialog. Just remember F stands for Find.

If you're on a page you want to print, do you search for "print" on the toolbar, or look for a printer icons, or just press Ctrl+P? Right! You press Cntrl+P to print the page.

Let's say you're using your browser and you want to open a new window? Do you just click the browser's shortcut to open a new browser window? Nah, just press Ctrl+N. Same thing if you're using an email program and you want to open a new window to compose an email.

If you're working on a document and you want to save it, you can press CTRL+S  instead of clicking 'File' 'Save'. If you want "File" "Save as" - Ctrl+S/ works in many applications.

If you want to view your browser's history, use Ctrl+H.   And if you want to view a list of downloads, with your browser open press Ctrl+J.

Let's review:

Ctrl+F = Find something on a page - in a browser, text editor, PDF editor, ebook, etc. To remember this easily, think F = FIND.

Ctrl+P = Print the document you have open. Whether it's a web page, a Word doc, PDF file, text file, etc. Think P = PRINT.

Ctrl+N = Opens  new window in the program that's running. Think N = NEW.

Ctrl+S = Saves the document you're working on. Think S = SAVE.

Ctrl+H = Shows your browser's history. Think H = History

Ctrl+J = Shows a list of downloads in your browser. Think J= ? I give up! J=Downloads!

What? You're right EB, that's six not five  I'm sorry. I will learn to count sometime. Consider it a bonus to our friends who read this.  And to mention:

Ctrl+A = Select All

Ctrl+C = Copy

Ctrl+V = Paste

And finally, my favorite of all...

Ctrl+EB = EB disappears.

From Bonnie to Walmart

Getting old isn’t much fun, no matter what you hear from those who claim they’re happier being old than they were when they were young. That’s just pure nonsense – or they had a very awful childhood. But anyway, growing old has this way of creeping up on you so that sometimes you forget how old you are. But for me there’s a simple test, I just walk down the street and see how many people under 30 even notice I’m walking by them. None. That’s how many notice me.

It’s kind of like being the invisible man.

When I was young I spent a lot of time chasing girls and carousing around – which, sadly, turned out to be a huge waste of time. But back then I didn’t realize how little time I had to waste. When I was 20 I figured I was good for another 50 years at least – 50 years seemed like such a long, long time. An eternity to a 20-year-old. Plenty of time to waste and still have plenty of time left do meaningful stuff!

Well those 50 years have almost come and gone and it seems like yesterday I was licking the same ice cream cone at the same time as Bonnie. Bonnie was a girl that my buddies hooked me up with when I was 16 and deathly afraid of girls...

Whether Or Not You Like the Weather, You'll Like This Weather Site

In one of my rare moods, I am going to be laconic. And this Site of the Week pick will be mostly done with pictures. Don't get into habit of expecting this sort of thing, but this weather site is so good, it doesn't need a whole lot of bloviation.

I will says this. This was once an app for Apple and Android devices only. To heck with all you Windows users they use to think. But then one day, one of the developers dropped his iPhone in the toilet and he walked around weather-less for an entire day. When he went to work the next day, sans iPhone, he came up with the bright idea of making their app available to over one billion Windows users.  And the rest, as they say, is history.

OK here's the pictures we promised you, along with very few words.

(All programs featured below work on Windows 7, Windows 8.1 and Windows 10)

Cloudeight InfoAve
Beautiful, brightly-colored weather maps for your area. That's our area up there.

I will wait 36 minutes before going on outside. I'm no fool.

Look! A whole week's worth of (mostly) lousy weather, all in a glance.

Rain, rain go away, fall on me some other day!

Cloudeight InfoAve

More weather details than most amateur meteorologists will ever need.

What was the weather like on the day you were married? How about on the day you were born? What about the blizzard of '77. Yep. It's all there in the Time Machine. Indeed, you can travel back in forth in time just like H.G. Wells imagined 122 years ago. Only now you can do it from your easy chair - no odd-looking time machine needed.

So whether or not you're ready or not, this really great weather site called DarkSky is ready and waiting for you to discover. So come on, you know you want to visit our Site of the Week, DarkSky. It's waiting for you right here.

You've successfully weathered the storm of my words!

What is a wildcard?

When EB and I used to play poker (HEY! Not THAT kind of poker) she always wanted to make a bunch of cards wild. I used to want just jokers to be wild. EB was so wild back in those days, she should have married Tarzan. She'd want 5's, 7's, 9's, queens and jokers wild. I'd be so confused with all the wild cards, I gave up and she always won by forfeit. That's just how she is.

Nooooo! That's not the kind of wildcard we're talking about. What's that EB? Don't end a sentence with a preposition? OK. That's not the kind of wildcard we're talking about, EB. Is that better?

Now...back in the days when EB was young and thin - and TC was dashing and macho - we used to use what were known as "Wildcards". For instance, if we were looking for a PDF file and we didn't know its name, we could use a wildcard to search for all PDF files on our computers.

The search would look like:

*.pdf

The asterisk is the wildcard. If we were looking for a text file but not sure of its name...

*.txt

Or a Word document:

*.doc or *.docx

And, though EB is no longer young and thin, wildcards still work on Windows 10 (and Windows 7 and Windows 8 and 8.1 too).

And it seems that Google also lets you use wildcards too, although we're not sure how useful that is.

To search Google using wildcards, you have to enclose the entire search phrase and the wildcard "*" in quotes:

For instance "Find the best * "

Returns the following (and hundreds more):

Find the best colleges & universities in the United States. Compare schools by rankings, tuition, acceptance rate, reviews, graduation rates and more.

Where to Find the Best Doughnuts in Philadelphia

How to Find the Best Spotify Playlists - Field Guide

Find the Best Available Public Wifi Using This App

Incredible Flight Deals: Find the Best Airfare Deals | Expedia

Best Restaurants Near Me - TripAdvisor

Wildcards can help you find things when you're not sure of the name of the file but you know it's type (extension).

EB, what are you thinking of? Oh, sorry! What are you thinking of, goofy?
