A comment from Vic
Thanks Darcy for all the time you spent recently in getting my computer back and running as it should after a so- called 'expert' had supposedly rid my PC of 'so many viruses, Trojans and malware it's a wonder your PC worked at all'! It took you a long time, Darcy, to rectify his meddling and now my computer runs like a dream! I'm so grateful to you and I recommend you to all my friends. Thanks again. Darcy.

A comment from Janice
Thanks to Darcy for coming early and staying late to fix problems with my email and other things on my computer! She flew around to places that I had never seen, made changes, did scans, and fixed a lot of things! Her skill and expertise are greatly appreciated and now my Windows 10 seems more like Windows 7 and things are working much faster and more smoothly. I would recommend this service! Janice

A comment from Jackie
Thank you to TC!! He is a Magic Man, and in my lifetime that is left I could never pay him enough for the way he put up with me and fixed this crazy eight computer. It is wonderful now and will continue to thank him all the days ahead. This is one dumb Okie and he made my computer look more like XP. I lost my winter house and see that I can now get it again. Oh this is one happy lady today. Thanks again for being there all these years for me with the newsletter too. Darcy, bet you are glad TC drew the short stick to fix mine...lol

A comment from Gail
I had a great session with Darcy at the repair helm which was great since I seem to be the one always behind the scenes and responsible for needing her help. As usual she was able to work her magic and get my tired old pc back in shape. I love this remote repair service, love your newsletters, love all that you two do. It means so much to a senior like me to know you are just a few keyboard taps away. Thanks again for helping me.

A comment from Marge
Thanks TC - you were able to review all possible problems and managed to hit the problem. When I first set up Windows 10 I did properly set all my defaults in Settings – System - Default apps but later I installed a different version of Microsoft Office and that setting then reverted to Chrome – hence “Email This Page” quit working. It never occurred to me to re-do those settings!! Thank you for all your help!!! I love the extension and am pleased to have it back.

Thanks to Vic, Janice, Jackie, Gail, Marge and all of you who wrote to us about the computer services you received from Cloudeight Direct Computer Care. We are so glad we've been able to help so many people from all over the world If you need computer service we hope you'll let us help you. TC & EB

Kathleen wants to know about Win Scrubber
Good Morning, I just saw a computer cleaner....Win Scrubber. Sounds like a winner, winner chicken dinner but wonder if it's really a fish. What say you? K

Our answer
Hi Kathleen. We did some research on WinScrubber. Our first impression was "what are they trying to hide". There is no information about the cost of the program. If you want to get it, you have to fill our a form. After further investigation we learned that WinScrubber is just another in a long line of snake oil software that promises to make your computer like new just by inserting a WinScrubber USB into a USB port on your computer and running it. Like all computer miracle software, WinScrubber is a scam. It won't make your computer run faster or better or like new. What it will do is make your wallet $29.00 lighter.

The problem with these programs is they are like diet pills that claim you can eat all you want and lose weight. It's not true. Yet hundreds of millions of dollars are wasted on miracle diet pills every year. The fact they don't work, does not dull the hope that you can eat all you want and lose weight if only you find the right miracle pill. The same is true of miracle computer cleaners/fixers. There will always be new millionaires made by shysters offering miracle one-click computer fixes to those who believe that somewhere there is a miracle one-click fix for computers and all they have to do is find it. Don't waste your money on WinScrubber.

Ann asks about firewalls and security programs
I have read your articles in regard to iOBit products, I have been using Advanced System Care for quite a long time as it was very convenient to have fire wall and security under one program, now that it is almost expired and I must purchase another program, I would appreciate any suggestion you may have for a safer product, I am also looking into the possibility of Emsisoft, but I am still left with needing a safe firewall and security system. I have never had any problem with IOBit, and find myself questioning whether to renew or not. Any help would be most appreciated, I look forward to your regular newsletters and read very carefully anything that could possibly affect my computer system. Thanks for your assistance. Ann

Our Answer
Hi Ann.   We use and recommend Emsisoft which is all the security you need. It is an antivirus/antimalware/anti-adware/anti-pup. Windows Firewall will automatically start when you remove iOBit. It is all the firewall you need despite what the people selling 3rd-party firewall tell you. In fact, we could make a lot of money selling firewalls, but we won't sell what we don't use, or what you don't need. Here is some reading on firewalls: http://thundercloud.net/infoave/new/you-don't-need-a-firewall/

Here is our order page for Emsisoft. We have an option to have us remove all current antivirus programs/suites, and install, Emsisoft for you. Or, you can download and install Emsisoft yourself. You will find more info here - http://thundercloud.net/emsisoft .

Lis has moved to senior living and wants to know how to secure her Wi-Fi
I use Emsisoft. What do I need for security of Wi-Fi now that I have moved to senior living?

Our answer
Hi Lis. It's great that you're using Emsisoft; it will protect you from PUPs and Malware. Wi-Fi security, on the other hand, is secure by how the Wi-Fi network is set up. We would assume the senior living facility has secure Wi-Fi for its residents. If you had to type a password to log on to the senior facility's network then your Wi-Fi is secure. If not, check with management to find out why it is not secured. We can't imagine any senior facility having open Wi-Fi, but it's possible. Check with the facility's management if you don't have to use a password to log on to the Wi-Fi in your facility.

Doug wants to know if he has a wireless adapter
How can I tell if my computer has a wireless adapter installed?

Our answer
For those who don't know, a wireless adapter is a hardware component and not a software program.

OK Doug... you can tell if you have a Wireless adapter by clicking on Control Panel then Network and Sharing Center. In the left pane, click "Change adapter settings" If you see only one adapter and it says "Local Area Connection" and you see nothing else, you don't have a wireless adapter. If you see two and one of them says Wi-Fi -- then you do (see screenshot below):

Cloudeight InfoAve

If you have no wireless adapter -- or your wireless adapter is not working, there's a very inexpensive way to give your desktop (or laptop) wireless capabilities without even opening the case or installing any hardware. In fact, all you have to do is buy a USB Wireless Adapter and plug it in. Some USB wireless adapters require you to install software from a CD before they'll work properly. In this case, the CD comes with the adapter.

You can purchase a USB wireless adapter for $20-$70 at Wal-Mart, Target, Best Buy, etc. You don't need a high-end (expensive) USB wireless adapter. Buy the least expensive one and it should work just fine.

Michel touts Driver Talent
I do not recall you commenting on DRIVER TALENT (drivethelife.com). It enables one to repair and upgrade drivers if need be. I have done so since installing Windows 10 on my laptop and it speeded it up quite a bit. I would obviously appreciate your comments on this freeware.

Our answer
Hi Michel. The only time you should ever update a driver is if a hardware component is not working correctly. Installing new drivers automatically (as most of these driver update programs do) is just asking for trouble.

As for making you system "faster"...drivers cannot make your system faster.

We cannot recommend Driver Talent or any other driver programs which claim to keep your drivers updated.

On the rare occasions when a hardware driver does need to be updated, drivers can be downloaded from the manufacturer's website.

We believe that installing driver updates unnecessarily causes a great many problems with Windows. If all your hardware devices and your display and sound are working correctly, installing driver updates automatically is not only unnecessary, it can also cause problems.

Add "Copy to" and "Move to" your right-click menu - Or ... How to make your own Reg files
Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10

One head scratcher that boggles the mind is why Microsoft took "Copy to" and "Move to" off the Windows default right-click menu. It was convenient and quick to right-click on a file we wanted to copy to or move to a different location and choose Copy to or Move to from the right-click menu. For some reason, Microsoft removed it from Windows after Windows Vista. Woe is us who have Windows 7, Windows 8x, or Windows 10!

We've shown you how to add Copy to and Move to back to your Windows right click menu - we created a couple of reg files (files that you can merge with the Windows registry to make changes) and gave you a link to download them.

But today, we're going to show you how to create your own reg files to add Copy to and Move to your Windows 7, Windows 8x or Windows 10 right-click menu. That's right, today were going to play, "Sing along with TC & EB".

OK. Important stuff: You must copy the Copy to and Move to information into separate Notepad files. You must copy the information exactly as we have it. After you paste the information into Notepad you cannot just name it and save it, you have to follow our instructions - so do not skip ahead or you'll be writing us telling us "This didn't work for me!!!" If you follow the instructions below, it will work for you, we tells ya.

Let's make a Copy to reg file to add "Copy to" to the Windows right-click menu:

1. Open Notepad - press Windows Key plus R, type Notepad and press Enter.

2. Copy the three lines below and paste them into Notepad:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AllFilesystemObjects\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AllFilesystemObjects\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\{C2FBB630-2971-11D1-A18C-00C04FD75D13}]

3. Name the file copyto.reg and change the save as to "All Files" not Text Documents (.txt) - see the picture below:

Cloudeight InfoAve

4. Save it to a folder or to your desktop where you can find it easily - you're going to be using it in a few minutes.

Now, let's make a Move to reg file to add "Move to" to the Windows right-click menu.

1. Open Notepad (as above).

2. Copy the 3 lines below and paste them into Notepad:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AllFilesystemObjects\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AllFilesystemObjects\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\{C2FBB631-2971-11D1-A18C-00C04FD75D13}]

3. Name the file moveto.reg, use the down-arrow to select "All Files" instead of "Text Documents (.txt).

4. Save the file to folder or your desktop where you can find it easily.

If you did all the above correctly you'll see two icons that look like this:

Cloudeight InfoAve

Now, right-click on one of them and select "Merge"...

Cloudeight InfoAve

You'll see this warning:

Cloudeight InfoAve

Click "Yes".

You'll see this confirmation:

Cloudeight InfoAve

Click OK.

Now, right-click on the remaining reg file and do the same thing. If you did everything correctly, you'll see this when you right click on a file:

Cloudeight InfoAve

There you go. Now you know how to create a reg file and how to use it to make changes. We do want to point out that you have to be very careful when adding things (or removing things) from the Windows registry - you can cause irreparable damage to Windows. So be sure you're getting information from a reliable source.

If you want to add Copy to / Move To, to your Window right-click menu and you don't want to make your own reg files, you can download them from us in one zip file. Just unzip the file to a folder, right-click on one of the reg files and merge it with your registry. Do the same with the second one.

All about your computer
All Windows Users

There are a ton of system information programs out there that will tell you all about your computer. But did you know, there is a good one built into Windows. While it may not be as pretty or as thorough as some of the others, it's fast and it's already on your computer. One of things we like about it is that it makes it easy to find the date on which you last installed Windows and time of your last reboot.  It takes about 10 seconds to open and gather up all kinds of information about your computer. Here's how to access it:

1. Open a Command prompt
   a. Windows 7 users: Type CMD in the Start menu search and click it when CMD appears at the top.
   b. Windows 8x users: Press the Windows key + S and type CMD in the Search box and click CMD when it appears in the search results list.
   c. Windows 10 users: Type CMD in the taskbar search (Cortana) and click it when it appears at the top.

2. Type SYSTEMINFO at the prompt in the Command Prompt window and press Enter:

3. Wait a few second while Windows gathers the information about your computer.

4. You see all kinds of information about your Windows computer including the date on which Windows was last installed, the time you last rebooted, your processor info, and much more.

See?

Cloudeight InfoAve

Cloudeight InfoAve

So now you know how to quickly find out a lot of information about your system without downloading or installing any third-party software.

Put Windows 10 On a Diet
Windows 10

If any of you, like me, have had problems with your weight at any time during your life, then you know what I mean when I say you feel “sluggish and slow”. Even tying shoes or bending over can be an effort (NO! I was never that “rotund”, EB.) If you were once drastically overweight and you lost 50 – 60 – 70 or more pounds, congratulations. I bet you felt leaner and had more vigor. If you’ve ever been on a diet and lost a lot of weight you know how tough it can be. For those looking for some secret diet tricks, maybe later. Today we are going to put Windows 10 on a diet. We’re going to make it leaner, meaner, and cleaner. And unlike us folks who’ve had to diet off 40 or 50 or more pounds and had to struggle to stay on our diets, Windows won’t suffer and it won’t take months to remove some blubber from it.

OK, now that we’ve completely lost you, let’s get back on track.

Click your Start Button —> Settings (or press Windows Key + i to bring up Settings)

In Settings, click on Privacy. In the Privacy dialog click on “Background apps”

In the Background apps dialog you’ll fine 20 or more background apps. You’ll also find that most or all of them are turned on for no good reason. For instance, if you don’t use the alarm clock, timers or stop watch features of Windows 10 – turn off Alarms & clock. Don’t worry your clock will not disappear from your taskbar. Turning off Calendar, won’t take away your calendar when you click on your clock in your taskbar. Anything you leave turned on will drain power and will make your computer less efficient and (I think) slower. Both EB and I had some abnormally high CPU and RAM usage going on – until we shut off most of these background apps. And you can’t go wrong. If you shut off something you need, you can turn it on as fast as you turned it off.

The more background apps you turn off the less power your computer will use. You might see an increase in available RAM and a decrease in processor cycles (CPU cycles) and those are good things – especially if you want your computer to run like a rabbit instead of a tortoise carrying a 50-pound sack of sugar.

Try turning off as many background apps as you can and put Windows 10 on a diet!

Weather or not you like Windows 10 apps

Windows 10

Yes, we know, it’s whether. But really, it’s not. It’s weather. The stuff of novels and movies and warnings and car accidents and wonder and rainbows and you know all the stuff that weather brings and inspires. And whether or not you like Windows 10 apps, we have a feeling if you try the Windows 10 Weather app – I mean really give it try, you’ll come to like it very much. And you’ll use it.

We have worked on several thousand computers with our Cloudeight Direct Computer Care service, and one thing we’ve learned is that people love photos, games, music and WEATHER programs. There are ton of them, many irritating (WeatherBug, Weather Channel Desktop) etc. A lot of flash and blink and annoy. Other’s flash and blink and annoy – PLUS display ads.

If you’re using Windows 10, you don’t need to download no stinkin’ weather programs, we tells ya! What more could you ask than current conditions. extended forecast, sunrise, sunset, moonrise, moonset, moon phase, record high and low for any date. Average highs and lows for any date. Real-time radar with animation, weather news, and on and on. Beside your location, you can add as many other locations as you want.

Let’s take a gander at EB’s Windows 10 Weather App setup shall we?

Every day’s a rainy day with EB! See?

Baby it’s COLD outside!

You can see the forecast for today in detail. Or click on any day in the 7-day forecast range to get the nitty-gritty. Above you can see the record high and average high (not shown but displayed are record low and average low). You can see the moon is waning. You can see it will set at 8:48 P.M. local time. The sun – what there is of it this time of year – will rise (we hope) an 8:12 A.M. when EB will turn over in her $5000 Sleep Number bed and yawn. She’ll text me to make sure I’m working, then she’ll turn over and go back to sleep until noon or so.

Above the regional radar for our neck of the woods. Below you can see our local radar and the animation progress bar near the bottom.

EB has homes all over the world – she likes to check the weather at all of her vacation homes so she can visit the one where the weather is ideal – depending on whether she wants to play golf, lie in the sun, or watch girls in grass skirts shaking on the sand …wait that’s me, not EB.

Anyway, she affords all this by paying me a pauper’s wage and forcing me to eat gruel and drink Kool-Aid.

In case you are wondering, her boyfriend Gustav, lives in Lakewood. If not for old Gustav, I assure you, Lakewood, Ohio would not be in her favorites.

EB has decided it will be French Polynesia for her next week...and milk of magnesia for me. She is planning on tanning up for Gustav.

Wait! Breaking news! She has just bought some Amazon rain forest property and will be setting up a vacation home there... she wants some really steamy weather to match her steamy demeanor. She also wants to swim in the Amazon doing some hunting (fishing?) for Vandellia cirrhosa, also known as candiru, cañero, toothpick fish, or vampire fish. She doesn’t go fishing for them for food, she does it for sport. She's a wild one! In case you're curious, you can read more about candiru and you’ll see.

The Weather App in Windows 10 even has a page of weather-related news you can read, when you’re not reading about the candiru fish.

All you have to do to set up your Windows 10 Weather app, is to click on your start button and click on Weather. At the bottom you’ll see a gear icon (yes the one Microsoft filched from Google). Click the gear icon to set up your location and you’re on the way. If you want to add more locations, click on the Star icon on the left side (see?).

Guess which icon you click if you want t go back to your home (local) forecast? Right, the house! How quaint.

We think you’ll really like Windows 10’s Weather app, even if you’re not a big fan of apps.

EB said she’ll email me from Manaus. We’ll see.

My Famous Quantum English Lecture

Someone once said that if you use bad grammar it’s kind of like having bad breath – you can say all sorts of intelligent things but no one is going to take you seriously. You can gargle and chew gum for your breath, but if you’re grammatically illiterate, until now, there was no easy solution. You can gargle or chew grammar - and I told care if you're a grammar authority or not. Or as my grandma used to say: "I'll put a knot on your noggin", God rest her soul.

Luckily for you, in this modern age of instant communion, instant love and instant food, serendipity prevailed and I stumbled upon the most amazing and revolutionary discovery in the history of the English language, or at least since Garmond Retutsi discovered the now overused exclamation point in Palp, Sussex, England in 1488 – a scant 4 years before Columbus discovered Hispaniola and six years after King Phillip III beheaded his youngest, prettiest and final wife, Queen Heather I. This was right before the Two Doors line of royalty began – and well before four doors became popular with families.

And yes, they still have revolving doors in New York City.

Anyway…

One summer morning, while I had nothing better to do – which is often the case on summer mornings – I sat behumbled on my couch listening to the air conditioner humming and my ears ringing. With this cacophony flowing through my head, I began thinking about a show I had seen several nights before on The Science Channel. It was about quantum physics. In this show they taunted us thinking viewers with some interesting concepts drawn from quantum physics. For instance, let’s say you live in Middleburg, Pa. I’m not accusing you of being from Pennsylvania, I’m just saying...

Now if EB and I would have thought of Paribus, we'd be lying in hammocks in Bora Bora sipping on blue cocktails with an umbrella in them and watching the local gals sashaying around in grass skirts with flowers in their hair and smiling. instead, we are bundled up in heavy blankets and shivering because we cannot afford to keep our thermostats turned up past 42 degrees. That's Fahrenheit not Celsius. Poor old Max Celsius never made it big in the USA.

The entertainment portion of this screed is nearly over, for we are about to call in the developers of Paribus to quell your laughter and give you the gist of Paribus. So, we're glad you stuck around this long, cuz now you're going to find out how cool this Cloudeight Site Pick really is - and how much money it can save you. It can save you enough that you can donate $10 or $20 so that we can turn on thermostats up to 55 degrees and just wear hoodies around our houses. With pants too, of course.

Now, without further entertainment, it's going to get a bit dry now, because we're turning it over to the developers of Paribus to tell you more about their service and how it can save you money if you do a lot of shopping online:

GET YOUR MONEY BACK

Stores guarantee money back when prices fall. But you have to ask. Paribus automatically gets you money back when:

PRICES DROP

YOU MISS A BETTER DEAL

YOU MISS A COUPON

And when Paribus gets you money, we get 25% of what we earn you. No success, no charge. Or refer friends and it can be 100% free.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Connect your mailbox to let the Paribus Receipt Fetcher identify purchases.

SHOP AS YOU NORMALLY DO
Paribus works quietly in the background to monitor for opportunities to get money back.

GET PAID
Whenever you are eligible, Paribus automatically files price adjustment claims on your behalf...

Paribus scans your inbox for receipts and automatically saves you money when the items you bought drop in price.

Stores often guarantee that you will get the lowest prices. They even promise to price match. But they don’t follow through unless you work for it. Paribus does the work for you. When you are owed money, Paribus automatically gets it for you.

Sign-up with your mailbox and Paribus handles everything else: Automatically detect purchases, monitor and compare price changes in real time, and engage with stores on your behalf to get you paid. See the Press Kit for full details and our story.

What does it cost to use Paribus?
If Paribus succeeds in getting you money back, we get paid 25% of what we earn for you. No success, no charge — you have nothing to lose.

Can I bring the cost down?
Yes! Refer a friend and we'll cut both your fees by an extra 5%. In other words, refer five friends and Paribus will make you money for free for the rest of the year! Incentives are subject to our Terms of Service.

What stores does Paribus support?
Paribus supports nearly twenty of the largest online retailers (including Amazon, Macy’s, Best Buy, Bonobos, and more) and is quickly adding more...
And so on... you get the idea, right? And if you don't get the idea, you can get a lot more information by visiting https://paribus.co/ . If you do a lot of online shopping, you can sign up with Paribus and save some money without doing any work. Unlike us who make no money and do a lot of work, right EB?

Get more information about and/or sign up with Paribus here.

What is a Run Command?

Sometimes I'll be helping EB with something and she'll ask me to get something. So I do. But I never move fast enough for her. She'll say, "RUN...don't walk!" And that is called the run command.

No! No! No! Windows Run Command is actually a command line where you can enter specific commands thereby impressing your friends and avoiding shortcuts and icons. You can look cool if you press Windows Key + R and type IEXPLORE.EXE and Internet Explorer magically opens. Why your friends will think you've gone geeky! Amaze them even more by typing CALC and hear them gasp in amazement when Windows calculator opens. Or dazzle them by typing in NOTEPAD and watch their eyes bulge as Notepad mysteriously appears on your screen. Or type Write and press enter and they'll genuflect as WordPad opens.

It can be used for serious stuff too, like running SERVICES.MSC (Windows Services), CLEANMGR (Disk Cleanup) or MSCONFIG (System Configuration Utility - but MSCONFIG isn't so hot on Windows 8x or 10).

In short, the Run Command allow you to, er, um. ah, run commands! Glory be!
